Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course:
A precepted advanced clinical experience in a selected clinical focus area. (3)
II. Prerequisite(s): Preparation of customized “Specialty Area Clinical Action Plan” designed to meet
individualized learning needs
III. Objectives of the Course:
A. Demonstrate advanced nursing knowledge in a selected clinical focus area.
B. Perform in the nursing roles of teacher, change agent, researcher, advocate, clinician,
consultant, collaborator, and systems manager within the specified advanced nursing role.
C. Apply appropriate theories from nursing and other related disciplines in planning,
providing, and evaluating nursing care.
D. Incorporate current evidence-based knowledge into the planning, implementing, and
evaluating of nursing care.
E. Collaborate and partner with interdisciplinary health team members and use community
resources to manage patient care.
F. Respond effectively to the influences of role perceptions and ambiguity in advanced
nursing role implementation.
IV. Expectations of Students:
A. Complete all assigned clinical hours.
B. Use journaling to analyze clinical experiences from an advanced nursing perspective.
C. Actively participate in graduate seminar sessions to explore select advanced nursing
topics related to clinical experiences.
D. Meet with faculty a minimum of three (3) times over the semester to review
progress in planning, implementing, and evaluating student’s progress towards
meeting course objectives.
V. Course Content or Outline
A. Clinical experience with preceptor in selected clinical focus are (255 hrs)
B.Guided Discussions and Case Presentations (15 hours)
1. Application of practice and accreditation standards to advanced nursing roles
2. Review of journal content/analysis/implications
3. Application of appropriate theories to select practice incidents/situations
4. Integration of appropriate evidence-based findings into clinical practice
5. Collaboration and communication skills associated with clinical situations
6. Integration of family and community needs into clinical practice
Total Hours: 270 hours

A. Current journal articles as appropriate.
VII. Basis for Student Evaluation:
A. Successful completion of clinical experience
B. Completion of clinical journals
C. Graduate seminar presentations/discussions
D. Evaluation by clinical preceptor
E. Participation in planning/evaluation meetings with faculty

VIII. Grading Scale:
90%-100% = A
80%-89% = B
70%-79% = C
