COURSE SYLLABUS FORMAT Southeast Missouri State University Department of Title of Course: Communication Studies Course No. 3XX Experiential Projects in Communication Revision (Exper. Comm. Projects) New X I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course: Provides students with experiential learning opportunities in communication that include public performance (debate and forensics), teaching internships, consulting, and public event planning and promotion. (1-3 credit hours, repeatable to 6) II. Prerequisite (s): SC 105 or consent of Instructor III. Purposes or Objective of the Course: A. Improving proficiency in oral and written communication through public performance B. Improving critical thinking skills as students apply key communication concepts to “real world” projects involving tutoring and event planning and promotion IV. Expectations of Students: A. Regularly attend all training, research or practice sessions B. Conduct themselves in a professional manner that favorably represents the department and university V. Course Content or Outline (Indicate number of class hours per unit or section): Because this course offers a variety of project options from which a student may choose, encourages combination of project types, and is offered for variable credit class hours per unit, calculation is problematic. The following list of project types illustrates expectations: A. Forensics/Debate 1. 2. One tournament for each hour of credit Travel eligibility a. Debate 1) Affirmative case 2) Negative research completed and filed 3) Two practice rounds b. Individual events 1) 2-3 events prepared 2) Two practice rounds **** All of the above must be completed on scheduled date to be travel eligible 3. Mandatory attendance at all scheduled practice rounds 4. Mandatory team meetings (Tuesdays 5-6 p.m.) B. Special Projects (Regional Heritage, Conversation Series, Public Performance, etc.) 1. One project for each hour of credit (unless otherwise approved by instructor) 2. Evaluation a. Educational value to community b. Attendance c. Professionalism of event d. Sufficiency of promotion/advertising 3. Mandatory group meetings, Tues. 4:30 or as scheduled C. Speech Lab Assistants 1. 2. 3.
