In accordance with the Universities Act, 1997, the objects and function of UCD include the following: a) To advance knowledge through teaching, scholarly research and scientific investigation b) To support and contribute to the realisation of national economic and social development Currently, the university sector is charged with delivering on the Government’s Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (SSTI) 2007-2013 which has outlined the requirement to double the number of PhDs. This requires the development of generations of PhD students. An internationally accepted element of MA and PhD studentship is to facilitate the student for a period of their MA or PhD studies in the generation of some income through undertaking part-time work in the university environment and related to their field of study while at the same time allowing UCD to retain the freedom to provide similar income opportunities to future students. The objective grounds for issuing this fixed term contract rather than a permanent contract is to enable the development of generations of MA/PhD students in line with the above. The fixed term nature of this contract underpins the fulfilment of this legitimate objective of the university. The contract will commence on 01 September 2014 and end on 31 August 2015. If, prior to the expiry of the fixed-term, you cease for any reason to be a registered MA/PhD student, your employment hereunder will cease automatically on the date that you cease to be so registered.
