A Declaration of Sentiments
From the Seneca Falls Convention on Women’s Rights
Read the statements from the Declaration of Sentiments and answer the
questions about each statement.
Statements one and two: “He has never permitted her to exercise her
inalienable [undeniable] right to the elective franchise [to vote]. He has
compelled her to submit to [obey] laws, in the formation of which she had
no voice.”
1. How have women’s opportunity to influence political and
governmental decisions changed?
Statement ten: “He has monopolized [dominate nearly all the profitable
employments, and from those she is permitted to follow, she receives but a
scanty remuneration [low wage].”
2. How have women’s job opportunities improved?
Statement eleven: “He had denied her the facilities for obtaining a
thorough education, all colleges being close against her.”
3. How have women’s opportunities to receive an education improved?
Statement thirteen: “ He has created a false public sentiment by giving to
the world a different code of morals for men and women…”
