WOW Game Title: Ice on the Pond
Content Area: Math
TEKS Focus: Addition and Subtraction
Physical Education Unit: Cardiovascular
Grade: Kinder
Resource: National Association for Sport and Physical Education, Tracy Lord
Equipment/Materials: Ice on the Pond Search Sheet, pencils, cones (optional).
Set Up: Have the students find a partner. Each pair has an Ice on the Pond Search Sheet (provided)
and a pencil. Have them line up at one end of the playing area. Students should decide which partner
will run first and which partner will work on the Ice on the Pond Search Sheet.
Activity:
On a signal, one of the students in the pair runs a lap around the playing area. When s/he returns,
then his/her partner runs a lap. While the partner is running a lap, the other partner is trying to circle
up to three numbers which are neighboring numbers (side-by-side, up-and-down, or diagonal) that
add up to the sums in the box below the pond of numbers. If the partner is done circling groups of
numbers before the running partner is done, the partner should do that many push-ups, jumping
jacks, curl-ups, or squats.
Variations:
 Have the students do skating motion, skip, gallop, or slide sideways instead of running.
 This game could be played with any academic area by replacing the math focused worksheet
with another academic worksheet.
Review Questions:
Skill focus: Why is running a cardiovascular activity?
Academic focus: Can you give me 3 pairs of numbers that add up to 12?
