WOW Game Title: Healthy Heart Relay Content Area: Science TEKS Focus: Nutrition Physical Education Unit: Locomotor movements Grade: Kinder Resource: AISD Physical Education Planning Guide, CATCH activity box 3-5 Equipment/Materials: Pictures of food (can be found in CATCH activity box 3-5), cards with names of food or plastic food, hula hoops (or crates, boxes, etc.) as a “grocery cart”, large play area. Set Up: Hula hoops are designated as Go, Slow or Whoa grocery carts. Students are lined up in groups of 3. Food pictures or words are face down on the far line opposite the students. Activity: On command, the first student of each group runs down and picks up a card. They run to the hoops and decide where to place that food. They run back to their line, the next students goes. Each student goes 3 (or what ever number is designated) times. When the whole group has gone 3 times each, they sit down. Variations: Change locomotor movements – skipping, galloping, sliding, jogging Each group can have their own containers for Go, Slow and Whoa foods Each group must have 3 of each group in their hoops. Use the food pyramid. Each hula hoop would designate a food group. Each team would make sure their own crate had one food from each food group. Review Questions: Skill focus: Why are we running (jogging, skipping, etc.) to play these games? Academic focus: Why is knowing the Go, Slow and Whoa foods important to our daily living?
