WOW Game Title: The Life Cycle of the Caterpillar (or Plant, Ladybug, etc) Content Area: Science TEKS Focus: Butterfly’s Body Parts Animals Change Patterns of Life Physical Education Unit: Locomotor Movement, Self Space Grade: 2 Resource: PE Central, www.pecentral.org Equipment/Materials: none Set Up: Large space (25x25) to move in, or a classroom, relatively free of debris Activity: Song: Three verses to the tune of “Mary had a little lamb”. First Verse: “I’m a fuzzy caterpillar, caterpillar, caterpillar. I’m a fuzzy caterpillar, about to make a cocoon.” Movement: Inchworm movement across the floor/ground. Hands and feet are in push-up position. With hands in one place, feet walk in to hands. Hands walk out away from feet. Repeat several times. Second verse: “I’m wrapping up into a cocoon, a cocoon, a cocoon. I’m wrapped up in a cocoon about to spread my wings” Movement: Arms go out and student spins around with arms coming in closer and closer until they feel all wrapped up. Then student stands very still. Third verse: “I’m a pretty butterfly, butterfly, butterfly. I’m pretty butterfly about to fly away.” Movement: Students cracks out of the cocoon, dries wings, and then flies off. Students skip around the room flapping their arms. Variations: Change the words and the movements to reflect other life cycles – ladybug, plants, seeds, etc. Review Questions: Skill focus: What motions would a butterfly perform (or ladybug, plant, etc)?
