WOW Game Title: Shape Association Content Area: Math TEKS Focus: Geometry and Spatial Reasoning Physical Education Unit: Locomotor skills Grade: 1 Resource: PE Central, www.pecentral.org Equipment/Materials: Three sets of shape cards, three sets of object cards portraying shapes (kite-diamond), 24 poly spots. Set Up: Tape the shape cards onto the top of the poly spots. Tape a different shaped object card underneath the poly spots. Scatter the poly spots throughout the 25’x25’ playing area. Students should be sitting in scattered formation. Activity: On the teacher’s signal, the students will use a specified locomotor skill (walking, jumping, skipping, galloping) to go to a poly spot. The student looks underneath the Poly spot to identify the object. The object card (taped underneath) will direct them to the next shape card (taped on top of the poly spot) located in a different area. For example, a picture of a wagon underneath the spot would direct them to a rectangle card on top of a poly spot; a picture of a tepee would direct them to a triangle card, etc. Play continues for 2-3 minutes. At that time a new locomotor skill is given and play begins again. Students should only go to a poly spot that is not occupied by another student. Variations: Students can use addition/subtraction facts with answers taped on top and number sentences taped underneath Different sizes of shapes could be used instead of object cards. Review Questions: Skill focus: Can you make your body in the shape of a triangle? Academic focus: What shape is a portable building? Clock Present Silo Letter Tepee Kite Watermelon Soccerball Keyboard
