Week 31 Pre-Kindergarten P.E. IPG’s Guideline PK/PHD: 1D Becomes more able to move from one space to another in different ways (e.g., running, jumping, hopping, skipping) Matrix #104 Locomotor Week #31 Card #11 Description Travel in different ways, sometimes on feet only – gallop, frog jump, walk – and sometimes on hands and feet – bunny hop, bear walk, crab crawl, and inchworm. When the leader calls an animal name, move around the room like that animal. Equipment Spot markers spread out on the floor to help your students to spread out. Day 1 Review the start and stop game from Week 19. (Spread students apart from each other so they cannot touch one another. This space where students do not touch one another is called “their personal space.” On the signal, have students move in slow motion. Emphasize safety by having them move toward empty spaces. On the signal, have the students stop. The time from start to stop should be about 10 seconds. Give students praise for starting and stopping appropriately upon signal. Repeat the activity, maintaining the slow motion, by having students move on tiptoes, then move giant steps, etc.) Have the students scattered in general space. Teach the students the different animal moves. Practice the start and stop game using animal moves for the locomotor skills. Animals to be used: Bunny Hop: students stand and jump using two feet together from one place to another; Frog Jump: students squat down and jump using two feet together from one place to another; Horse Gallop: students stand and gallop by putting one foot in front of the other and following that foot as they move from one place to another. Have all students perform the same animal movement at the same time. Day 2 Review Day 1. Have the students scattered in general space. Teach the students the different animal moves. Practice the start and stop game using animal moves for the locomotor skills. Animals to be used: Bear Walk: students bend over and place their hands and feet on the floor. They walk with the hand and foot from the same side moving together; Crab Walk: students sit on their bottoms with their hands face down on the floor behind their hips. They lift their bottoms off of the floor and walk on their hands and feet; Inch Worm: students bend over and place their hands on the floor as well as their feet. They move by bringing their feet up to meet their hands and then walking their hands back out in front of them and repeat the process. Have all students perform the same animal movement at the same time. Day 3 Review the previous days. Have the students scattered in general space. Teach the students the different animal moves. Practice the start and stop game using animal moves for the locomotor skills. Animals to be used: Elephant Walk: students stand and put their arm out in front of them to represent the trunk. They move by walking slowly swinging their trunk from side to side; Kangaroo Jump: students stand and jump using two feet together from one place to another with their hands up at chest level; Bird Fly: students place their hands out to their sides to represent wings. As they move around the room, they should flap their wings up and down. Have all students perform the same animal movement at the same time. Day 4 Review all of the animal movements from the previous days. Read a book about animals. As the animal names are mentioned, have the students pretend to be that animal and move around the playing area. Allow students to create movements for animals that they did not learn. © Austin Independent School District Animals SportFun A Module of the Sport For All Program Week 31 Pre-Kindergarten P.E. IPG’s Day 5 Have a circus parade using all of the animals learned. Have students create movements for the letters of the alphabet (animals). There are several CDs available to play during the parade. A good one is “A-Z Animal Alphabet Songs” by David S. Polansky. Teacher Notes Clearly define the boundaries. Teach each “animal” action to your students and have them practice it thoroughly. When frog jumping, your students should warm up first and not bend knees too deeply. Be sure your students are watching where they are going, especially when moving on hands and feet. Do not have them move very long in one position. Mix up movements on feet only with movements on hands and feet. © Austin Independent School District SportFun A Module of the Sport For All Program
