Week 29 Pre-Kindergarten P.E. IPG’s Guideline None Matrix #120 Throwing: Underhand Roll Week Card #29 #30 Rolling with a Partner Description Stand facing a partner and roll the ball to your partner. Equipment Playground balls Tennis balls Pins Day 1 Place 8 cones or spot markers in a straight line in the playing area. Have 1 student stand on or next to the marker. Have another student stand behind each student. You should have 8 lines with 2-3 students in each line depending on your numbers. (With 20 or more kids, form 10 lines) The first student in each line should have a ball. On the start signal, all students (with a ball) roll the ball straight out in front of them as far as they can. After all of the balls have been rolled, say, “go” and have the students run and pick up their ball and bring it back and place it on or beside the marker. The next person picks up the ball and waits for the signal to roll. All students must roll and chase on command to ensure proper safety. Use a larger ball to practice beginning rolling. As students become proficient, change the type and size of the ball that they are rolling. (playground ball, softi ball, tennis ball, etc.) If students are continuing to progress (the ball is being rolled forward in a straight line each time), have the students run to get the ball as soon as they roll it and the next person can roll immediately. Day 2 Review Day 1. Place 2 markers across from one another about 10’ apart. Have one student stand on one marker and a partner stand on the other. Have students roll the various objects back and forth to one another. Encourage accuracy and emphasize stepping with the opposite foot and following through with their hand to the target. Day 3 Review previous days. Place a bowling pin on each marker. Have the students stand beside or behind the pin to roll the ball. Each pair should only have 1 ball between the two of them. Have the students roll the ball to attempt to knock over the bowling pin. If it is knocked over, the partner sets it up and then rolls the ball back to the other pin. Have students count the number of times the pin is knocked over. Day 4 Review previous days. Have 2 students stand behind each marker. Place a bowling pin across from them on a marker about 15’ away. On the signal, have the first student roll the ball toward the pin trying to knock it over. The roller should chase the ball, set up the pin, and then bring the ball back to their partner to roll. This can be done to a signal first until the students understand the rotation. As they become proficient, they can roll and chase on their own. Remind students to watch where they are going as they chase their ball. Day 5 Review the previous days. Have the student and their partner stand facing a wall. One student should roll the ball to the wall. The partner should catch the ball as it rebounds off of the wall. The student catching the ball should then roll it to the wall for their partner to catch. As the students become proficient, different size balls may be used. Teacher Notes Look where you are rolling the ball. Be particularly careful when traveling in general space. Be aware of other students when rolling and retrieving balls. If your students tend to bounce rather than roll the ball – have them bend over. If your student is having trouble with accuracy, adjust their alignment with the target. © Austin Independent School District SportFun A Module of the Sport For All Program
