You will know what is expected of you IP Essay = 10% Three objects, decide whether they should be digitized Assignment is on the website already [grading page] I will provide more information when we get closer to the assignment Context is important, for example Participation = 40% Discussion = 2 pts/class Doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up I will post discussion questions related to the readings on the class listserv on the Monday before class. (That means there will be questions posted Monday 4th for Friday 8th class) Be prepared for a discussion of the issues introduced in the readings. Participation = 40% Blogging = 2 pts/blog entry If you’re not going to get an “A” in this class, it will be because of this. If you don’t do 5 blog entries, you’ve automatically gone down to a “B,” for example Easy and fun way to make 24 of the possible 100 points in this class JUST. DO. IT. Lists of websites on [Resources] page What does “Participation” Mean, Anyway? Not cut and dried Some people are shy [not everyone, though] I’m cheerful and open to differing views. I try to make it easy to talk. Looking for engagement, eye contact, statement of opinions and interest in the issues. You don’t need to be an expert, just an informed participant. How to show up to class and still not get credit for participation Reading the paper Falling asleep Seriously. Just don’t show up. It brings me down. Blogging Class blog = http://xxx.blogspot.com/ You will be receiving an “invitation” from blogger. Accept it. Give yourself a nickname if you’re concerned with privacy That said, the blog will not be public, and I will not link to it from anywhere. Virtually invisible. “Blog This!” Blogging (continued) Find a digitization project, review it Blog entry should contain three paragraphs Collection Principles Object Characteristics Metadata Based on A Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections, completely reviewed at http://courses.ischool.utexas.edu/megan/2006/Fall/INF385R/blog_objectives.php Should take about 30 minutes to do Sources of Blog Entries Smithsonian Institution Library: Library and Archival Exhibitions on the Web http://www.sil.si.edu/SILPublications/OnlineExhibitions/CF/oe_display_alphabetical.cfm?AlphabeticalSort=A [=B, =C, =Dノ] Virtual Libraries and Museums Pages: http://vlmp.icom.museum/ Smithsonian Institution Library: Smithsonian Online Exhibitions: Industry and Technology Galaxy: http://www.sil.si.edu/galaxy/industry.cfm Mosaic of Science Galaxy: http://www.sil.si.edu/galaxy/mosaic.cfm Art and Design Galaxy: http://www.sil.si.edu/galaxy/art.cfm American Discovery Galaxy: http://www.sil.si.edu/galaxy/american.cfm New York Public Library Digital: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/ AND MANY MORE!!!
