Queries and Search Terms Boolean Syntax Advanced Search Channels Topics BETA Viewing Content by Channels or Topics BETA Results Anatomy Find Within Results Export (Save) Results The Query Box Query Boxes appear at the top of most ASME.ORG pages and the main search pages. Type your query in this box. A query can be as simple as words separated by spaces, or it can take advantage of more advanced Boolean features. Boolean Syntax The ASME.ORG search engine now supports the most advanced features of the major search engines using a unified Boolean syntax that follows standard conventions. "" Enclosing your search query in quotes should return more exact results. AND or + or and or nothing Finds documents containing all of the specified words or phrases. Video AND disc finds documents with both the word video and the word disc. Note that this is the default option. OR or or Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. Video OR disc finds documents containing either video or disc. The documents returned can contain both words, but not necessarily. AND NOT,NOT or Excludes documents containing the specified word or phrase. Video AND NOT disc finds documents with video but not containing disc. host: or site:hostname Finds pages on a specific host. The search host:asmeconferences.org would find pages where the host name (the first part of the URL) contains asmeconferences.org. Advanced Search Features To provide end-users with more flexibility and control over their search experience, we have created a more thorough Advanced Search feature. The Advanced Search can be used to limit or modify your query. Additional Features currently include: Searching within a Channel By selecting one or more channels using the checkboxes, end-users can restrict their results to certain locations of ASME content. Limit Results to File Types End-users can now limit the results to certain file types. For example, if you know the file is a PDF, you can check the box next to PDF Documents. Entering a keyword of "Congress" would return results only on PDF documents where "Congress" is a part of the content. Limit Results to URLs that Contain End-users can now specify the URLs or Domains that the file they are looking for might include. For example, if your keyword is "A17" and you know that you need a web site that contains "calendar", type calendar into this field. About Channels - Left Side of Screen, first tab ASME's broad spectrum of web-enabled content, products and services are divided into Channels and sub-channels. Channels act as containers or repositories of information. Currently, Top Level Channels appear in alphabetical order. About Topics (BETA) - Left Side of Screen, second tab In addition to presenting content, products and services in pre-defined Channels and Sub-Channels, ASME offers a BETA version of natural or ad-hoc Clustering by Topic. The Clustering Engine analyzes page titles and their abstracts for common themes that occur near your search keyword or phrase. Once that analysis is done, the Clustering Engine creates an ad-hoc category based on its Findings. Viewing the Contents of a Channel or Topics Clicking on the name of a Channel will do two things: Expand that channel's contents and display all of the search results that it contains to the right of the Channel hierarchy. Expanding a Channel or Topic Clicking on the plus sign or the Channel Name will expand the Channel, displaying below it the Channels that it contains. Number of Search Results in a Channel The number displayed next to a Channel is the number of unique search results that a Channel contains. Results Anatomy Page Title The title of the search result is displayed on this line. Clicking the Page Title will take users to the found page. Description Many web pages at ASME have short descriptions that allow users to gain more information prior to clicking through to the found page. The URL of a Result The URL of a search result is listed here. Viewing the Page found in a new window Click the [New Window] link to show the found page within a new window. Previewing the Result Page Click the [preview] link to show a preview of the result page within the search results itself. This allows you to see where you are going before committing with a click through. Clusters Clicking on the [clusters] link will highlight all of the Channels in which this particular search result occurs. Find Within Results To refine your search for specific text within the search results, type the text you would like to find into this box and click . Channels which contain results that match this text will be highlighted in yellow, as will be all occurrences of this text in the list of results. Export Results By selecting the checkbox next to a result, then clicking the Export as button at the top of the results screen, you can save the results of your search for later use in text or html format by saving the exported document to your local PC.
