GE Course Proposal Guidelines The call for semester-based GE course proposals provides an overview of the GE requirements and encourages faculty to refer to the revised University policy on General Education at http://web.calstatela.edu/academic/aa/ugs/index.php. Also available at the same link are rubrics for each of the Block and specific designation GE requirements. To clarify the revised GE policy and questions regarding GE designation proposals please refer to the following: GE designations are as follows: GE A1 GE A2 GE A3 GE B1 GE B2 GE B3 GE B4 GE C1 GE C2 GE C AM GE D GE D AM GE E IHE GE UD B GE UD C GE UD D (cl) (d) (re) (wi) Oral Communication Written Communication Critical Thinking and Composition Physical Sciences Biological Sciences Physical-Biological Sciences Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematical Concepts Arts Humanities American Institutions (U.S. History) Social Sciences American Institutions (Government) Lifelong Learning and Self-Development Introduction to Higher Education Upper Division Natural Science and Quantitative Reasoning Arts and Humanities Social Sciences Civic Learning/Community Engagement Diversity Diversity with focus on issues of Race and Ethnicity Writing Intensive In addition, please note the following: IHE courses must meet the criteria for IHE as defined in the Faculty Handbook, the criteria for Block E, as well as the GE Civic Learning/Community Engagement outcomes. IHE courses should not use the GE E or (cl) designations, however; Block E and civic learning/community engagement outcomes are assumed within the IHE designation. However, if an IHE class is also meeting diversity requirements, it should add either the (d) or (re) designation as appropriate. Civic Learning (cl) designations are not available to courses that do not meet the requirements for Upper Division GE (UD/B, UD/C, UD/D). Note that the requirements for a civic learning/community engagement (cl) course differ from the requirements for service learning. A civic learning/community engagement course does not require students to serve as volunteers in the community. There are other approaches to providing community engagement or civic learning experiences. Diversity course designations (d and re) are not available to courses that do not satisfy at least one other GE requirement at either the lower division or upper division level. Writing Intensive course designation (wi) is available to any course that meets the criteria for Writing Intensive courses. For the Writing Intensive (wi) designation, the course must fulfill the (wi) criteria in the English language. Writing Intensive (wi) courses may be at the lower or upper division, but must require satisfactory completion of blocks A2 and A3 as a prerequisite. At least one upper-division Writing Intensive (wi) course must be offered in the major. The course a department has designated to fulfill the Upper Division Writing Requirement in the major may also be used to fulfill the Writing Intensive (wi) requirement in the major, as long as that course requires satisfactory completion of the GWAR as a prerequisite, and meets all the required (wi) learning outcomes. All upper-division GE courses must include as prerequisites the completion of Blocks A and B4, an additional course from Block B, and at least one course each from Blocks C and D
