Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering 1 (CE 210) [0] 35/2 Dr. SaMeH S. Ahmed Associate Professor of Environmental Eng. Civil Engineering Department Engineering College Majma’ah University s.mohamed@mu.edu.sa faculty.mu.edu.sa/smohamed/SaMeH CE 210 Dr SaMeH 1 CE 210 Dr SaMeH 2 Course Goals The aim of this course is to increase the ability of the Civil Engineering student to deal with the different types of soils (sandy, silt, clay, gravel, boulder,.. etc) and determine the properties of these soils. Also to provide the student with the principles and concepts of soil mechanics and foundation Engineering. The course involves laboratory work and exercises. CE 210 Dr SaMeH 3 Outcomes The student is expected to be able to: • Determine the types of soil by different laboratory tests. • Understand the effect of soil properties on the engineering characteristics of soils. • Classify the soil according to origin and properties. • Find the specific weight of soils. • Understand the concept of stresses. • Find the effect of soil type on the stress distribution within the soils. •Evaluate the shear strength under different conditions. • Calculate the settlement and consolidation of soils. • Understand the slope stability problems. CE 210 Dr SaMeH 4 Course Topics • • • • • • • • • • • Introduction, Soil classifications, Definitions and important relations in soil mechanics, Methods of soil classification, Soil permeability and water movement in soil, Compaction of soils, Settlement and consolidation of soils, Stress within the soil Stability of slopes, Shear strength of soils, Excavation and bracing, Site investigation CE 210 Dr SaMeH 5 Student's duties 1. Students are required lectures in regular base. to attend 2.Students are asked to revise in advance the contents of the course and CE 101 or CE 281. 3.Participating in the discussions, prepare reports, give at least one seminar, and do all homework‘s. Consulting the course teacher at any time during the office hours.
