Course Goals
The aim of this course is to increase the
ability of the Civil Engineering student to deal
with the different types of soils (sandy, silt,
clay, gravel, boulder,.. etc) and determine the
properties of these soils.
Also to provide the student with the
principles and concepts of soil mechanics and
foundation Engineering.
The course involves laboratory work and exercises.

Outcomes
The student is expected to be able to:
• Determine the types of soil by different laboratory tests.
• Understand the effect of soil properties on the
engineering characteristics of soils.
• Classify the soil according to origin and properties.
• Find the specific weight of soils.
• Understand the concept of stresses.
• Find the effect of soil type on the stress distribution
within the soils.
•Evaluate the shear strength under different conditions.
• Calculate the settlement and consolidation of soils.
• Understand the slope stability problems.
