Before filling in the application form:
 Please make sure that you meet the criteria, listed below, for participating in this
programme.
 Please submit the application form (pages 2-3) to your institutional contact along with
your CV by Friday 17th June 2016. If you don’t know your institutional contact, please send
the form to the RENKEI secretariat at renkei@britishcouncil.or.jp

Criteria for participating in this programme
All applicants must meet the following criteria:

Applicants must be a Master’s student or Ph.D. (doctoral) student, or post-doctoral fellow
at one of the 12 participating universities. (We can accept up to 2 participants from each
RENKEI member university)

Applicants must be enthusiastic about collaborative and interdisciplinary work.

Applicants must be able to commit fully to the programme in Kyoto and Nagasaki and
must be able to travel to Japan.

Applicants are expected to participate in the preliminary discussion via Skype and read
relevant materials prior to the programme.

As the programme will be conducted in English, applicants must be able to communicate
in English, although competency in written English is less important.

Applicants must be able to contribute to disseminating the outcome of the workshop to
wider audiences in cooperation with RENKEI member universities and the British Council
which is the secretariat of the RENKEI initiative.

Applicants are expected to be able to participate in the programme in
Liverpool, the UK in August 2017. That workshop, in collaboration with the
International Slavery Museum, will be titled “The Politics of Memory,
Commemoration and Memorialisation” aims at reminding us that dealing with
the past is a deeply political endeavor and of the need to constantly recognize
and revisit political and other struggles of the past.

Applicants must be able to bring their own laptop PC/Mac to work with in Japan.

Excellent: Refined fluency skills and topic-controlled discussions, debates &
presentations. Formulates strategies to deal with various essay types, including
narrative, comparison, cause-effect & argumentative essays.
Good: Conversational accuracy & fluency in a wide range of situations: discussions,
short presentations & interviews. Compound complex sentences. Extended essay
formation.
Fair: Broader range of language related to expressing opinions, giving advice, making
suggestions. Limited compound and complex sentences & expanded paragraph
formation.
Poor: Simple conversation level, such as self-introduction, brief question & answer
using the present and past tenses.

Accommodation in Kyoto
Ritsumeikan University will provide a shared room in International House
near the campus. 2 participants of different nationalities are expected to
share a room as part of the programme. The room rate is ¥1,800 a night
(¥14,400 in total + ¥500 bed linen fee)
If there is a reason why you are unable to share a room with another
participant, please indicate it below or on an attached document.
※Please note that single rooms will be arranged in Nagasaki and that they
are paid by the programme.
