GRADUATE RECITAL / THESIS CHECKLIST The following has been devised to give you a clear idea of the process of presenting a recital according to the procedures of the Department of Music at Binghamton University. If you have further questions after reading this form, please see the Director of Graduate Studies for further clarification. PROCEDURE 1. 2. □ Schedule a tentative recital date with the Concert Manager, Marnie Wrighter (FA161). □ Obtain a Thesis Proposal Form (the Music Dept. website or in the graduate filing cabinet located in the mail/copy room (FA160)); complete this form (typed) and submit it for approval to your advisor and two (2) other faculty members selected by you (in consultation with your advisor). They must sign the form before the process detailed below can proceed. 3. □ Submit the completed Thesis Proposal Form to the Director of Graduate Studies in accordance with the deadline dates below (these dates are also published in the Department of Music Graduate Handbook); it will then be reviewed by the entire Graduate Committee. September 15: for recital dates in the sixth through the last week of the fall semester December 1: for recital dates in the first through the fifth week of the following spring semester February 1: for recital dates in the sixth through the last week of the spring semester May 1: for recital dates in the first through the fifth week of the following fall semester Proposals to meet ensemble requirements for pianists and to meet opera role requirements must be submitted at least four weeks before the performance date. If a specified deadline is not met, the Director of Graduate Studies will not accept the proposal and other ensemble or role performances will have to be arranged for, or the recital will have to be rescheduled. 4. □ Once approval has been secured (the Director of Graduate Studies will send you notification in writing), please inform Marnie Wrighter (FA161) so that the recital date is firmly set in the departmental concert calendar. Following this: a) schedule practice times and your dress rehearsal in Casadesus with Marnie b) complete the “Student Recital Reservation Form” c) see René Neville, Assistant to the Chair (FA163), to pay your recital fee. René will also register you for your thesis (Course MUS599) . 5. □ 6. □ Make sure your advisor and faculty committee are clearly aware of the date on which you have scheduled your recital, and subsequently remind them one week prior to the event. On the week of your recital, verify that your instructor has obtained a thesis approval form from the graduate filing cabinet (FA160) prior to your performance. Following your recital, this form must be signed by the various faculty who comprise your “committee,” and returned, along with a copy of the program, to the Graduate Director following your recital.
