All students are assigned to Director of the PhD program for temporary advising. Full-time students are
expected to formalize their choice of primary advisor, secondary advisor, and interdisciplinary consultant by
the end of their second semester through the program of study meeting (by the end of the third semester
of study for part-time students). Primary advisors focus on the professional socialization of students,
involving them in scholarly activities beyond courses and dissertation such as co-authoring papers,
presenting at research conferences, assisting with manuscript reviews, and co-teaching. Students are
encouraged to utilize secondary advisors for additional guidance in completing major program milestones,
professional mentorship, and support. At least one of the advisors, primary or secondary, should be a
faculty member in CCPA. The interdisciplinary consultant must represent a discipline unique from that of
the primary and/or secondary advisor and will bring an enriching disciplinary perspective to the student’s
doctoral program.

Transfer Credits and Requests for Course Substitutions
Normally, no doctoral courses completed in another program or at another institution will be accepted.
Additionally, substitutions for core course are unusual will only be allowed in extreme circumstances. The
Committee must unanimously approve proposed transfer credits or requests for course substitutions and
students must consult with the faculty instructor for the course they are proposing to transfer or substitute
to make sure they have (or will be able to) met the learning objectives for that course. Students interested
a more individualized plan of study should contact The Graduate School for more information about
constructing their own doctoral program. Students must submit an official "Application for Transfer Credit"
request through their faculty advisor to the PhD Program Director for approval if the committee approves
transfer requests. If approved, then the Director will forward the application as a request for the Graduate
School's approval. Application for Transfer Credits or requests for course substitutions must include
relevant syllabi and transcripts for verification of grades. Copies of syllabi and transcripts should also be
attached to this Program of Study.
