COUNSELOR EDUCATION DEPARTMENT MEETING
Thursday, May 8, 2014 ~ 9:30 a.m Winther 3002
Present: O’Beirne (chair), Betters-Bubon, Anderton, Van Doren, Norman, Pressley, Okocha
and Kim (note taker)
We enjoyed a visit with Dean Heyning, Provost Kopper and Chancellor Telfer. We provided
them with departmental updates. Chair O’Beirne called the meeting to order at
approximately 10:35am.
1. Approval of minutes (5/1/14) – last week’s department meeting minutes were
approved via a Norman/Betters-Bubon motion.
2. We briefly discussed the importance of helping prospective students understand
the differences between an MSW program and Counselor Education.
3. Jennifer encouraged us to attend the fun event scheduled for COEPS on May 16th.
4. Orientation – we reviewed the fishbowl activity along with the rest of the
schedule/agenda for New Student Orientation (6/19). Time will be watched
carefully to keep the orientation moving and to finish in a timely manner.
5. Assessments and CACREP – We reviewed the baseball diamond diagram. Along with
words and data points, these documents will be part of the CACREP report.
Faculty/staff were reminded to use the T drive and when using it…keep revision
dates current. As well, we should provide directions (i.e. in the header/footer) to
help users know where to locate the document. We also reviewed (briefly) some
working directions provided by Linsday (GA) with reference to CMHC standards.
6. This summer will be filled with CACPREP work. Audit & Review is coming fast at us
as well.
7. What we’re learning (follow-up with persons who were admitted to our program and
chose not to attend) – we discussed reasons that some prospective students
rejected our program. Two ideas for marketing were mentioned; market in
different geographic areas and include GA positions when marketing.
8. Exit interviews – we talked briefly about this process and explored the idea of
gathering the information (feedback about the program) at an earlier time (earlier
than exit interviews with interns). CE alum could help with this process.
9. Student concerns – one student concern was discussed.
The meeting was adjourned by an Anderton/Okocha motion. We will reconvene as a
whole department for a meeting on Monday, August 25 @ 1pm in WH 3002E.
Respectfully Submitted, Krista Kim
