Young Auditorium Hosting Free Event: World Music Festival
WHITEWATER – Young Auditorium ushers in the official start of their 2014-2015 performance
season with the 2014 World Music Festival public concert on Wednesday, September 17th. This year,
two of the four performances will take place outdoors, starting earlier in the afternoon. Evening
performances will be held inside on stage at Young Auditorium. All shows are free, but tickets need to
be reserved for the evening performances. Tickets are reserved separately for each event, so
attendance all day long is not required. Videos of the artists and more information about the event
can be previewed on Young Auditorium’s website: www.uww.edu/youngauditorium .
The festival begins with La Yegros at 1:30 p.m., performing on an outdoor stage on the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater campus. La Yegros has been a powerful presence on the Buenos Aires
underground scene for many years. Mariana Yegros's vibrant sound, unique voice, and larger-thanlife presence gives her the point-of-view of an artist with South American flair, but a global mindset.
At 6:00 p.m., the Young Auditorium outdoor courtyard will come to life with the sounds of Erkan
Oğur’s Telvin Trio. Erkan is a musician and composer whose compositions combine the sounds of
Turkish folk music, classical music and ancient traditional music. He is regarded as a master of
fretless guitars, having invented the first fretless classical guitar in 1976. Fretless stringed instruments
include the baglama and kopuz lutes, which generate melodic tones heard in most music from the
Mediterranean, Middle East and Central Asia.

Tickets are required for the limited seating available in the courtyard for this performance, but concert
goers are also welcome to sit outside on the lawn and enjoy the food and music as well. At 5:00 p.m.,
guests will be able to purchase food from vendors outside on the Young Auditorium circle driveway.
The World Music celebration does not end until much later. Inside on the Young Auditorium stage,
two energetic artists will perform beginning at 7:30 p.m. First in the line-up is Oumar Konate, who
hails from Gao, Northern Mali. Oumar has emerged as one of the leading young masters of the
guitar. He immediately touches your spirit with his passion for music and song. His style combines
folk traditions with rock guitar, jazz, and modern rap.
The evening ends on a high note with the excitement created by Orkesta Mendoza. Sergio Mendoza
helms one of the most exciting Latin music bands today; a mambo big-band like you've never
experienced. He and his orchestra, along with vocalist Salvador Duran, bring a fevered energy and
vital approach to classic mambo and cumbia - a dance music similar to a salsa.
To reserve tickets, stop in or call the Greenhill Center of the Arts Box Office (located in the Greenhill
Center of the Arts atrium on the UW-Whitewater campus) at (262) 472-2222, or reserve tickets online
at www.uww.edu/youngauditorium. Tickets reserved online can now also be printed at home (small
fees apply for this service).
