GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS AND REGISTRATION
The GSE Symposium will be offering 2 optional information sessions for all GSE
students prior to the proposal form due date, February 26, 2010.
November 19, 2009 @ 12:00 p.m., Location TBA
January 25, 2010 @ 6:00 p.m., Location TBA
The sessions will be an informal discussion related to the proposal process, presentation
forms, and strategies for presenting. Although the intended audience is students who
wish to present in the Symposium, we encourage all students to attend and participate
in the information sessions. Attendance is not mandatory for presenters.
STEP 1: Decide whether you will submit a pre-assembled panel or individual
proposal.


PRE-ASSEMBLED PANEL: We encourage you to submit a pre-assembled panel with
other students for the 50-minute session. Co-panelists should have a similar research
topic and presentation format. You and your panel members will identify your panel on
the Proposal Form, indicating your panel members and the title of your panel. The panel
title should be concise and descriptive to reflect the topic of all presentations. Panels are
encouraged to contact a faculty member to be the session moderator and identify their
choice on the Proposal Form.
INDIVIDUAL: Individuals may submit a Proposal Form and will be given equal
consideration as a pre-assembled panel. When the Symposium Committee reviews the
accepted proposals, individual proposals will be placed into panels so that there are 2-4

presenters for the 50-minute session. Panels will be formed on congruence of research
topic and presentation format. The Committee will contact a faculty moderator, although
individuals may suggest possible moderators. All presenters will be notified of
acceptance Wednesday, March 19, 2010, provided the session titles and names and
contact information of co-panelists. Presenters are encouraged to collaborate with copanelists prior to the event.
STEP 2: Decide the Format of your presentation.
 Paper presentation – Present a paper in a 50-minute session with 2-4 other paper
presentations during one 50-minute session. Each individual presentation will be
approximately 7-10 minutes with additional time for questions and moderation.
Examples might include class project, research component presentation, a completed
paper prepared for publication, or dissertation findings. There is no requirement for
presenters to submit a completed paper. Paper presentations are designed for research
projects that are completed or near completion.
 Poster presentation – Present a visual display of your work during the fourth 50minute breakout session. All presenters who chose the Poster format will be presenting
during the same session and will display their visuals in a common area. Prepare for a
question-and-answer segment throughout this session. Suggestions might include a
research project report, Master’s projects, TEI inquiry project, or Master’s thesis.
 Workshop presentation – Present your work in an interactive format during a 50mintute session. Individuals may have a 7-10 minute presentation or may choose to use
the entire 50-minutes as a collaborative group. Presenters may discuss common issues
with the audience or engage the audience in an activity. Presenters should anticipate
questions, comments, and suggestions for future research. Examples might include
presenting a professional development design, discussing a technique or model,
demonstrating a lesson, or reporting research. A group of presenters having individual
projects with connected themes and alternative procedures may submit as preassembled panel. If applicable, please address the presentation’s Objectives and
Activities.
