Graduate School of Education Doctor of Education Application to Candidacy Instructions The Ed.D. Application to Candidacy is an official description of your academic intentions. It should be filed after four semesters of full-time enrollment or its equivalent credit hours and program qualifying requirements. It is to be completed in consultation with your advisor. Primary responsibility for evaluation of the Application to Candidacy rests with the student’s respective committee; the department is responsible for insuring that the Application to Candidacy is complete prior to submission to the GSE Graduate Degree Committee with whom the final decision rests. Please submit the original and one copy to the department office and keep one copy for your records. Attach official transcript(s) showing baccalaureate degree conferral and supporting any credits transferred from other institutions as well as an unofficial UB transcript. A full descriptive title is necessary. GSE requires a minimum of 72 total credit hours including a minimum of nine credit hours of dissertation guidance. (Departments may have their own requirements regarding minimum credit hours.) At least 48 credit hours must be taken at UB; no more than 12 credits hours of dissertation guidance may be used to meet this requirement. Transfer courses must carry a grade of “B” or better. An Informal Course Description form must be attached for each informal course (other than dissertation guidance) for which there is no description in official UB publications. Arrange the course according to these four headings: Major Area, Research, Electives, Dissertation. Provide subtotals of credit hours for each heading and grades for completed courses.
