PERIOD ACTIVITY REPORT SUMMARY
JUNE 2003 – SEPTEMBER 2003
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR PERIOD
ALUMNI






Selected four new members of the Alumni Hall of Fame: John Thompson, Chief Financial Officer,
Imaging Automation; Doug Brown, Director, MCC Campus Center; Patrick O’Flynn, Sheriff, Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office and Teresa Hall, owner and founder, MedMarket Consulting, Inc and Finger
Lakes Brace Company.
Hosted 30 volunteers on the first two days of the new semester; assisted an estimated 400
students.
Acquired 1,500 new alumni e-mail addresses.
Delivered the Alumni Issue of Foundations reaching 65,000 alumni worldwide.
Completed chapter on alumni development in community colleges for the League for Innovation.
Established volunteer leadership for two capital campaign segments.
ANNUAL FUND


Annual fund giving, including events, totaled $611,000 for 2002-2003.
The Directors’ Challenge was very successful. A total of 923 gifts and pledges qualified for the
match, 80% from first-time donors - 180 donors increased their giving by an average of $82.

Final Board participation was 73%.
BOARD GOVERNANCE






Approved slate of officers for 2003-2004: Leonard Redon, Chair; Richard Warshof, Executive
Vice Chair, David Mack, Vice Chair Board Governance; Wayne Gilman, Vice Chair Budget; Diana
Lauria, Vice Chair Special Events; Alan Resnick, Treasurer; Howard Konar, Secretary.
Approved new directors to serve a three-year term ending August 31, 2006: Jeffrey Cleary, Scott
Kogler, Trina Marquez, James R. Smith, Philip Yawman.
Approved current board member reappointees to serve an additional three-year term ending August
31, 2006: Brenda Babitz, Gilbert Hatch, William Hughes, Arnold Klinsky, Howard Konar,
Justin Smith, Richard Warshof.
Appointed R. Carlos Carballada, Simon Braitman and James P. Nichols as Honorary Directors.
Approved the formation of the MCC Foundation Council. Appointed Richard Guon, Audre
“Pinny” Cooke, John L. Bartolotta, Daniel M. Garr, Stephen D. Natapow, Harris H. Rusitzky
and Dr. Peter A. Spina as council members.
Held new board member orientation, hosted by David Mack, chair of Board Governance.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN







Total gifts and pledges as of August 31, 2003 = $7,836,863.
SWBR completes donor wall design; ASI-Modulex will build and install by November 20.
Arnold Klinsky, José Coronas and Tim Reichgott appointed to Vice Chair roles for Business
Campaign; Jim Shaw, Jim Ward, Larry Glazer, Howard Konar, Bob Brennan, Scott Kogler,
Emilio DiCataldo, Jeff Cleary, Justin Smith, Don Jeffries, Russ Achzet and Bill Hughes are
Team Captains.
Retiree initiative, chaired by John Trevisan, set goal of 100 gifts totaling $100,000. Angie
Chamberlain and George Monagan co-hosted a briefing for athletic department; Jane Garr for
retired nursing department faculty and staff.
Lee Patterson ’64 and Bob Vance’64 will co-chair an initiative targeting 720 students who started
in the fall of 1962 as MCC’s first class. Dom Montulli ’64 is honorary chair. Goal is $50,000 total in
gifts and pledges.
Heather D’Errico is leading Phi Theta Kapa initiative; Jodi Oriel is vice chair. Goal is 25 gifts and
a minimum of $10,000.
MCC Bookstore pledges $5,000 to campaign; organizes “Foundation Fridays” to promote Building
on Success among student population.

DONOR RELATIONS



Annual endowment reports sent to donors of Foundation endowment funds.
President Flynn hosted a luncheon on July 22 for the five new members of the Foundation’s Board
of Directors. The luncheon was followed by a tour of the new Campus Center.
Seventeen donors have qualified for the new E. Kent Damon Lifetime Giving Society that
recognizes cumulative support to the Foundation over a donor’s lifetime. Letters were sent to them
in August informing them of this new honor and a donor plaque will be installed at the Brighton
campus.

President’s Circle Reception held on September 30 at the new Brighton Campus Center. Fortyeight donors and guests were in attendance. New members of the E. Kent Damon Lifetime Giving
Society were recognized as well as the three new members of the President’s Circle who were in
attendance.
FINANCE/INVESTMENT/AUDIT COMMITTEES





Approved third quarter financial statements ending May 30, 2003, and month ending June 30,
2003.
Prepared and reviewed third quarter investment activity with Investment Committee.
Endowment sub-committee recommendations for 3.5% spending policy approved by Investment
Committee.
2003-2004 Budget approved by Board.
Met with Audit committee to discuss audit timeline. Currently working with Deloitte & Touche on
August 31, 2003 year end. Draft of audited financials to be received from Deloitte & Touche by
third week in October.
PLANNED GIVING



Secured two new planned gifts, Suzanne McKim and James Schwender.
Generated two new planned giving leads via Ideas.
Published the second issue of Ideas, the planned giving newsletter targeting donors, retirees,
faculty and area financial advisors.
PUBLIC RELATIONS







Summer issue of Foundations produced and mailed.
2002-2003 Annual Report, A View to the Future, completed.
Advertisement for the Rochester Business Alliance Membership Directory designed and submitted.
Nomination for Wayne Gilman to be a candidate for the Association of Governing Board of
Universities and Colleges Distinguished Service in Trusteeship Award submitted.
Developed and submitted an article based on the John Thompson Scholarship for the upcoming
SUNY Case Statement (Michael Luck).
Developed the 2003 Annual Fund Case for Support package.
Developed a “scholar’s card” to introduce scholar-donor communications.

SCHOLARSHIPS




The Thompson Family Scholarship Committee met on June 6 to award their scholarships for the
2003-2004 academic year. Thirty-two students will share in a total of the $30,250 that was awarded.
The first recipients of the new M&T Bank Scholars Program for Rochester City School District
graduates have been named. Two of the students are from the School of the Arts and one is from
Wilson Magnet.
New scholarship – Lifetime Assistance Nursing Scholarship established by the Lifetime Assistance
Foundation of Monroe County. The scholarship is for a nursing student pursuing a career in the
field of developmental disabilities.
Process in place for students whereby they can thank the donors of their scholarships via e-mail to
scholarship manager at Foundation.
SPECIAL EVENTS
19th Annual Scholarship Open – July 14, 2003




Successful event netted $46,765.
140 golfers (35 foursomes) participated.
Eight (8) company-named student scholarships established through event sponsorships.
