eW/FS/WE/001 DDi Every factory makes something. We can also say a factory produces products. Makes something = Produces products To produce something, a factory uses water. The water can be used: To clean the factory To clean the products As part of the product To cool the product or machinery To drink or prepare beverages, such as tea and coffee. Sanitation Once water is used, it becomes an effluent. An effluent is used water that the factory must get rid of. When used water is cleaned up for re-use, we say it is treated for recycling. There are laws that forces factories to clean up their effluents before it is discharged into rivers, lakes, the sea or any other water source. This law is there to protect the environment. If the water is part of the product, e.g. in a cool drink factory, we cannot re-use the water. If the water is used to clean the factory or the products, it forms a soapy effluent, that the factory can dispose of or that the factory can re-use if they can clean it up a bit. Sometimes they do not need to clean the effluent, if it is not smelly. They can e.g. re-use cooling water over and over, since it is not contaminated with anything and gets recycled through pipes all the time. www.ewisa.co.za Contact: ewisa@wamsys.co.za or ewisa@wisa.co.za www.ewater.co.za www.waterinfo.co.za www.waterinformation.co.za
