WRITING CONTEST
RICE AWARD FOR BEST PERSONAL ESSAY (not to exceed 2000 words)
COONEY AWARD FOR BEST LITERARY ESSAY (an essay that analyzes or explicates one
or more specific works of literature, not to exceed 2000 words)
LANGLOIS AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FICTION (not to exceed 3000 words)
CLOOS-SUSSKIND AWARD FOR BEST POEM (single poem, not to exceed 60 lines)
MCMURRAY AWARD FOR BEST PHILOSOPHICAL ESSAY (not to exceed 2000 words)

Each winner will receive a CASH PRIZE of $150, RECOGNITION at a special
ENG/PHL Awards Ceremony on May 12, 2005, and RECOGNITION at the MCC AllCampus Awards Ceremony. Entries received before March 31 will be considered for
submission to a nation-wide community college student literary competition.
RULES








Only Fall 2004 or Spring 2005 “for credit” MCC students of any major, may enter
Submissions will be accepted until April 15, 2005.
Winners will be announced by May 6, 2005 by mail.
Manuscripts must be left in 5-532 on the MCC Brighton Campus or in DCC 5-252 at
Damon City Campus (DCC Student Services Center).
Entries must have been written during the student’s enrollment in credit courses at MCC
(but not necessarily FOR a course).
All submissions must be typed, double-spaced, free of markings, and free of grammatical
and mechanical errors.
All submissions must include a title page containing the author’s name, social security
number, home address, phone number, and title of the work.
All materials submitted must be original and previously unpublished in any but college
publications.
