DRAFT ONE IDEA FOR A new governance organization
One IDEA new faculty governance structure with questions
Senate – reduced in size, duties of representatives changed
Current duties:
School Representatives to the Academic Senate are expected to communicate regularly to their constituents, including the School Curriculum
Committee and Department Chairs, the business and issues before the bodies on which they serve , to receive feedback from their constituents
on these matters, and to convey that feedback to the Senate. Structure & Functions will provide to Senators and Committee Members a set of
suggested means for such communication.
Proposed: Representatives from Schools shall consult with the departments they represent regarding matters before the Senate or
matters departments would like to see brought before the Senate. Representatives are encouraged to use any means they find effective
to gain the opinions of departments in their constituencies. Representatives from Schools are encouraged to bring resolutions or items
for discussion from their constituencies to the Senate via the Executive Committee. Representatives for entire Schools should endeavor
to represent the diversity of opinion that may be present in their Schools on Senate matters.
Current Number:
2.1 NUMBER
Representative Senators shall be elected by each of the Schools, by the Library, and by Student Affairs according to the formula: one Senator for
each 20 FTEF and one additional Senator for the major fraction of 20 FTEF which may remain. The term "major fraction" shall be understood to
mean more than 10 FTEF. FTEF shall be calculated each Spring by averaging the Spring and Fall totals from the previous calendar year. The
Structure and Functions Subcommittee shall, annually, prior to the close of the Spring Semester, determine the number of Senators to be elected
in this manner. Each unit represented shall have at least one representative Senator.
Proposed: The Schools of Arts and Humanities, Science and Technology and Social Sciences have two seats on the Senate. Business
and Economics, Education and the Library have one seat on the Senate. Representatives from Schools with two seats on the Senate
shall be apportioned by _________________ into constituencies of specific departments. The Schools shall communicate to the Senate
office each election cycle which representatives are serving which departments. Ideally, the Senator representing a group of

departments shall be elected from one of the departments they represent. For Schools with only one seat, they are to be elected by the
School and represent the entire School. (9 school based reps)
Curriculum Planning and Oversight Committee (NEW) – 6 School reps and 2 at-large
Looks at Program Reviews to ascertain patterns in the curriculum that need to be addressed, identifies strengths of
curriculum that can be supported more or continue to be supported and promoted, and weaknesses that need to be
addressed. From this data and other sources, such as the Graduation Initiative dashboard, or other SSU data from
Institutional Research, recommends overall curriculum planning, development, goals, and academic policies to the Senate.
Can be approached with innovative curricular ideas to bring forward to the Senate, i.e. FYE type programs or other such
ideas. This committee would bring the ideas/tasks to the Senate for approval, UCC would approve the specific
curriculum. (macro view of the curriculum)
EPC becomes University Curriculum Committee – a subcommittee of CPOC and only reviews curricular proposals,
revisions, new GE courses, etc. Determines process for curricular proposals and maintains the Curriculum Guide in
consultation with new committee described above. 6 School Reps. (micro view of the curriculum)
Has GE and Grad Studies as subcommittees – Memberships and charges remain the same.
CPOC has University Standards as subcommittee. Could use their annual report to determine what university regulations
are constantly asking for waiver and how that might be addressed, if patterns found.

CPOC has Senate Diversity as Subcommittee. This committee would give feedback on diversity in the curriculum and
provide faculty with resources and workshops to help infuse more perspectives in the curriculum. Researches and helps
define what a truly diverse curriculum would look like. Works closely with CPOC.
FSAC
FSAC subsumes AFS into it’s charge. Could add more members to the committee, perhaps a couple of at-large positions?
Or could AFS be a task force?
Has subcommittees for PDS, URTP and FSSP – memberships and charges stay the same.
SAC
SAC subsumes the Academic Advising subcommittee into it’s charge. Perhaps adds a member from the Advising Center.
If the Schools create school based advisors, consults with them on how faculty governance could support them.
Has subcommittees of Scholarship (potential membership change, but is a mixed faculty governance/administrative
committee) and Dispute Resolution Board – no need for membership change.

DRAFT ONE IDEA FOR A new governance organization
No membership change, but perhaps some process changes.
Ex Com
No membership changes, except perhaps just one At-Large member from Senate?
Senate Budget Subcommittee
Membership would need review if change happens. Put in charge that the Senate must task SBS each year. SBS could
bring that task or Senate could recommend. If no task presented, committee on hiatus. Current chair requests that EPC
and APC chair be replaced with At-Large members.
