This packet contains all the information you need to apply to the Diagnostic Medical Imaging program at City College of San Francisco. We hope it answers all of your questions but if it does not, feel free to email us at DMI@mail.ccsf.edu. The first step is to learn the proper name of the profession you want to enter. We are called radiographers and we are also known as radiologic technologists. A radiographer produces radiographs or uses other equipment to get a diagnostic image of parts of a patient's body. Radiographers are highly skilled members of the healthcare team with responsibilities that include assisting Radiologists (the physician) to perform complicated and difficult procedures such as biopsies, aspirations and vascular studies. They also work with surgeons during surgical procedures in the operating room. Radiographers also have continuous contact with patients during procedures. They educate patients about the examination, give injections of contrast material when needed and also give emotional support. Radiographers monitor each patient as they perform the examinations and react to emergency situations as a first responder. This profession encompasses far more than simply radiographing the skeleton. Successful Radiographers are detail oriented, interested in science and math, comfortable with computers, empathetic towards patients, customer service oriented, know how to prioritize based upon the needs of patients and physicians, and have EXCELLENT communication skills. This DMI Program is a rigorous, demanding, full-time program making outside employment difficult if not impossible. Candidates are strongly urged to evaluate their financial status prior to application and plan for expenses including: tuition, fees, texts, uniforms, shoes and transportation. It is also strongly recommended that applicants complete the General Education courses required for the Associate of Science degree prior to entering the DMI program. Students are encouraged to visit the counseling departments at CCSF regarding questions about transferability of prerequisites and graduation requirements. General questions about prerequisite courses or volunteer requirement may be directed to any of the DMI Program faculty members. Enrollment procedures: 1. Become an official student at CCSF (if not already a CCSF student) 2. Complete all DMI prerequisites with a 2.5 GPA and all other coursework with a 2.0 GPA. 3. The DMI Program is an integral part of this community college and combines general education and radiology courses to accomplish that goal. The DMI program is full-time, thirty (30) months in length and leads to national certification and state licensure. The DMI program has a rich history starting in the 1950’s at City College of San Francisco. This program enjoys long-term relationships with major San Francisco Bay Area hospitals where students conduct their clinical laboratory education. The DMI program has achieved prestigious accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (www.jrcert.org) ۰ 20 North Wacker Dr., Suite 2850 ۰ Chicago, IL 60606-3182. All successful program students must graduate with an Associate’s degree and a major in Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) upon program completion. Those students who already possess an A.A., A.S. or higher degree must matriculate through the college and meet all CCSF graduation requirements to complete the DMI program major. Upon completion of the DMI courses, and having met the CCSF requirements for graduation, the student is eligible to sit for the nationally recognized American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination in Radiography, and upon passing, will be eligible to apply for the California Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT) license and California’s Fluoroscopy Permit. DMI program contact: 50 Phelan Ave. San Francisco, CA 94112 Voicemail: 415-239-3431 Email: DMI@mail.ccsf.edu PHYSICAL EXAMINATION, IMMUNIZATIONS, BACKGROUND CHECK & DRUG SCREENING Upon acceptance into the DMI program the following must be completed: 1. Physical examination by a physician to determine the physical health of the student. 2. Immunizations and positive titers against certain diseases described later in this packet. 3. Negative background check for any previous felony or misdemeanor convictions. 4. Negative drug screening. Any misdemeanor, felony conviction, or positive drug finding may impact the applicant’s ability to attend the clinical education component, complete program requirements and/or obtain eligibility for certification. If the applicant has ANY previous convictions of a misdemeanor or felony, please contact the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) at www.ARRT.org ethics department or call (651) 687-0048 BEFORE starting the program in order to establish eligibility for certification. When a student is considering the investment of the time, effort, and resources to learning a new profession; it is imperative to invest substantial effort to research the field to determine whether it is a suitable career choice. To that end, prospective applicants are required to experience some time in a radiology department to observe radiographers at work performing general radiographic procedures. VOLUNTEERING GUIDELINES The DMI program strongly recommends completing the volunteering first before investing additional time, effort, and money in the remaining prerequisites. All applicants and hospitals must adhere to the following guidelines or the applicant will be disqualified: 1. 2. 3. 4. Observe both patients and radiographers during general radiographic procedures for a minimum of 40 hours. This experience must take place in an acute care setting (hospital), and not at an ambulatory care setting (clinic) or doctor’s office. a. Hours spent volunteering in healthcare settings other than in a hospital will not be credited towards the prerequisite. b. The experience must be verifiable by completing the appropriate form provided in this packet. c. If the hours are not verifiable, the hours will be disqualified. 40 hours of volunteering in a hospital based radiology department observing technologists working with patients performing general radiology examinations is required. a. Some hospitals may require students to complete 100 hours of volunteering. All hours beyond the 40 in radiology can be done anywhere within the hospital system. b. Volunteering more than 40 hours in a radiology department will not improve an applicant’s chances of being admitted to the program. The experience should be completed within a six month period to be effective. The seven year time limit also applies to this prerequisite. All applicants must complete and submit either the official forms contained in this packet or those from a prior application period. a. The applicant must have the opportunity to observe radiologic technologists performing general radiologic examinations for at least 30 of the 40 hours required. However, the applicant may do all 40 hours in general radiography. General radiography areas include: i. General Radiology (Skeletal Radiography, Chest X-Rays, etc.) ii. Fluoroscopy (Barium Studies, HSG, VCUG, RUG, Aspirations, Biopsies, etc.) iii. Surgery (any surgical procedure) b.
