Tips for Parents of Commuter Students As a caring family member of a new college student who is going to commute, there are many things you can do to help make the transition smooth and successful. Be aware that college is very different from high school, both in amount of work and in level of independence. Professors rarely accept late work and expect students to be responsible for knowing when things are due. Missing class does not excuse a student from what was discussed. A syllabus will be given for each class at the beginning that details class requirements, deadlines, and course material. Your student can expect to do 1-2 hours of school work and studying for each hour spent in class per week. It will be important to have a comfortable place to study away from distractions. As a parent, be aware that your student will need to spend time at home on college work (it doesn't just occur in class). Commuter students often spend less time on campus and may feel less connected. It is vital for your student to get involved. There are over 100 clubs and organizations available to join that will provide the chance to meet people, learn new skills and information, and grow as a person. Time management will be key to your student's success. Looking ahead at what is due and beginning projects early will relieve stress and prevent doing too much at the last minute. Also, schedules are different in college. A student may have three classes in one day with large breaks in between. Using that time wisely will be important. The university and its staff are dedicated to your student's success. There are many free resources available to help with concerns or problems. Encourage your student to make use of what the university offers. Students frequently turn to family and friends for advice regarding courses, students need to be encouraged to talk with their academic advisors or professors for expert help. Finally, this tip sheet is only a brief introduction to what you need to know. Take the time to read the booklet "A Guide for Families of Commuter Students," and discuss the information with your student. It will truly help you to support your student's success.
