Chem 1212L Principles of Chemistry II Lab Fall 2015 Instructor: Dr. Martin R. McPhail Office: TLC 2129 E-mail: mmcphail@westga.edu Office Phone: (678) 839-6019 Office Hours: TBD Course Information Class: Chem 1212L (CRN 82106 - 1 credit hour) Meeting Time: F 9:00 – 10:52 am Room: TLC 3108 This lab is a co-requisite of Chem 1212. If you have previously received a C or better in Chem 1212L and are currently taking Chem 1212, contact me ASAP so that we can allow you to drop the laboratory section. Course Description This laboratory course is designed to complement the material covered in Chem 1212 and is a co-requisite of that course. A series of experiments treat the fundamental behavior of gases, liquids, solids, and solutions including their thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibria. Learning Outcomes 1) Students will apply fundamental principles of thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibria to describe observed behavior of gases, liquids, solids, and solutions. 2) Students will operate cooperatively to solve laboratory challenges through the application of practical, creative, and critical thinking skills. 3) Students will be able to collect, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data collected in the lab. 4) Students will be able to communicate their findings clearly and in their own words. 5) Students will demonstrate good laboratory technique, safe lab conduct, and cooperation with other students. Required Materials: This course will employ the MeasureNet system to acquire data in some of our labs. You will need to register at www.measurenet.net to access your data. You will need to bring a copy of the laboratory procedure along with materials to take notes of any your observations. These observations will not be collected, but they will be useful in writing a good report. You will need access to a scientific calculator during lab 1 Course Assessments Preparing for Lab Lab work will require preparation and care to complete in the time allotted. It is therefore critical that you understand both the theory and procedure of the experiment before coming to lab. Lab material will be posted on Course Den. Before class you will need to: 1) Read all laboratory material. Accessing the “handout” unlocks the pre-lab. 2) Print out a copy of the lab procedure or write out a procedure in a notebook. You will need to have a copy of the procedure to perform the lab. 3) Complete the pre-lab questions. These are your ticket into lab and must be turned in at the start of the lab. During Lab You are responsible for working in a safe, timely manner to complete your experiment in the allotted time. Failure to work safely or complete your experiment on time will result in a deduction from your Lab Conduct grade. Make sure to record all observations and data through the MeasureNet system and/or a notebook. Making good observations is a necessary component of good scientific practice and will be useful for writing a quality lab report. After Lab Clean up the lab space, clean and store glassware, and unplug hotplates. Failure to clean and prepare your space for the next class will result in a deduction from your Lab Conduct grade. Reports Laboratory reports are due before the next lab period. One report per individual is required. Even though experiments are performed and data is collected as a group, each person will generate their own report. ‘Sharing’ lab reports or material therein between students counts as plagiarism (see the Academic Honesty Policy below). Such ‘sharing’ can include, but is not limited to, copying any part from another report (i.e. yours or another student’s) with no or minimal change. As with any other instances of plagiarism, students found ‘sharing’ reports will earn 0 points for the report. Be sure to include your partner’s name on your report. Reports are to be typed, follow formatting guidelines, and include information requested in the lab material. Reports will be graded for proper formatting and content, scientifically accurate and clear discussion, and correct use of Standard English. Reports should be uploaded to the drop box on Course Den as a Word .doc file with the following naming convention: lastname_lab#_descriptionoflab.doc For example: smith_lab7_HessLaw.doc Assessment Grading Your final grade will be an average of all your individual grades. Each lab will be graded according to the following component break-down: 2 Pre-lab Quiz: 10 % Lab Conduct: 10% Lab Reports: 80% Grading time for lab reports may vary, but every effort will be made to return the previous graded report before the next report is due. Grading Scale______________ A 90 – 100 B 80 – 89 C 70 – 79 D 60 – 69 F 0 – 59 Course Policies and Information University Policies and Academic Support Please carefully review the Common Language for all university syllabi, which can be found at: www.westga.edu/assetsDept/vpaa/Common_Language_for_Course_Syllabi.pdf This document provides important material pertaining to university policies and responsibilities. These statements are updated as federal, state, university, and accreditation standards change, so you should review the information each semester. Disabilities Act/Accessibility for this Course If you are a student whom is defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act and requires assistance or support services, please notify me and provide me with a copy of your packet from Student Services. Academic Honesty Policy Any form of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating and plagiarism, will result in a failing grade on any relevant assignment as well as possible additional action. Definitions of academic dishonesty and plagiarism are defined in the student handbook, so please be familiar with them. The student hand book can be found at http://www.westga.edu/handbook/ Student Conduct Students are obligated to abide by the guidelines in the university catalog. Respect and courtesy are required of all students while in the classroom. The following are also mandatory: 1. Experiments in the chemistry laboratory routinely employ hazardous materials and equipment. Being aware of these hazards and conscientious of your work space is critical for ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you. Failure to follow safe laboratory conduct will result in expulsion from that day’s lab and a zero on your lab report. Proper 3 dress and personal protective equipment are required to participate in a lab. Please refer to the safety guidelines and specific safety instructions for each lab for further information. 2. We will discuss the experiment and associated hazards at the beginning of each lab, so it is important to be on time. Tardiness will result in a grade reduction for that lab. 3. Glassware must be cleaned and put away upon completion of the day’s experiments. Lab spaces must be clean and tidy before leaving lab. Failure to do so will result in a grade reduction for that lab. Missed Labs Laboratory attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend a lab will result in a zero for that lab. Absences will only be excused in the case of an emergency, but these will require you present official documentation. Note on Syllabus Modifications I reserve the right to modify this syllabus at any time during the course of the term. Students will be notified of all syllabus modifications. In a case where a substantial modification is required, I will reissue a revised syllabus.
