CHEM 1211 Lab Spring 2015
Instructor: Dr. Stuart Office: 2-125
Phone: 678-839-6022
email: dstuart@westga.edu
Office Hours: Tuesday & Thursday 11 am-12 pm and by appointment.
You must email me through your D2L account or I will not respond.
Required materials: We will be using MeasureNet technology for some of our labs. You will need to register
at www.measurenet.net to access your data. There is a one-time registration charge of $10 payable online to
MeasureNet. You will also need a composition book to record your data and observations.
Objectives: To apply the knowledge obtained in CHEM 1211 lecture to problem solving in the laboratory,
develop good laboratory techniques, work safely, take data carefully, record relevant observations, and use
time effectively.
Tardiness / Missed Lab: Lab attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences will result in a grade of zero. No
make-up labs will be permitted. At the beginning of each laboratory we will discuss the laboratory. You must
be present. Lateness will be penalized by deduction from the grade for that lab.
Preparation for Each Lab: The labs will require preparation and careful work to complete in the allotted time.
It is important that you understand the theory and procedure of the experiment. The lab material will be
posted on Course Den, you will need to do the following:
1. Read all laboratory material before coming to lab. Accessing the “handout” unlocks the pre-lab.
2. Write out a procedure you will follow in your lab notebook. Include space to fill in data and results.
This will be checked before you are allowed into the lab. No admittance without a written procedure.
3. Take the pre-lab quiz. You will need to pass the quiz to access the drop box for your report.
During the lab: You must record all data and observations in your composition book. Use non-erasable ink,
and never use white out. If you make an error, simply strike it out with a single neat line.
After the lab: Clean up the lab space, clean the glassware and put back in the drawer, and unplug hotplates.
Have an instructor check your area before you depart. This is a good time to ask them questions about the lab
write up.
Reports: Laboratory reports are due before the next lab period. One report per individual is required. Even
though you are working in a group and collaborating on data, each person will generate their own report. Be
sure to include your partners names on your report. The reports are to be a minimum 200 words in length
(discussion section), typed, and include the information requested in the lab material. For example, copy and
paste any of your measurenet generated graphs into the DOC file. Late reports will incur a 10% penalty for
each day the report is late. You will upload the file to the drop box as a Word .DOC with the following naming
convention
Lastname_lab#_descriptionoflab.DOC
For example:
stuart_lab7_HessLaw.Doc
Academic Misconduct: Honesty in reporting results is one of the essential characteristics of your laboratory
work. Little of your grade depends on getting "good" quantitative results. You will be more severely penalized
for misrepresenting results than for honestly reporting "poor" results. You may discuss the lab results with
other groups, but copying lab reports (any part) shall be considered academic misconduct, and as a result, will
be penalized to the fullest extent possible.
Learning Outcomes
1.
To communicate chemistry with clarity. Attainment of this learning outcome will be reflected by the
students’ abilities to:
 Follow oral and written instructions to successfully complete laboratory assignments.
 Work with other students in assigned group projects.
 Write formal laboratory reports as chemists write.
2.
Use appropriate scientific tools and instruments to acquire data, process information, and communicate
results.
Grades: Your grade will be the average of all your individual lab grades. Each lab will be graded using the
following:
[Pre Lab Quiz: 10 %]
[Written Procedure/ notebook: 10%]
[Lab Reports: 80%]

As a student, I will adhere to the following safety rules:
1.
I will follow all general and specific instructions given by the instructor for a lab activity.
2.
I will study my assignment. If I am in doubt about any procedure, I will ask the instructor or one of the
laboratory assistants for help.
3.
I will not perform activities that are unauthorized, nor will I engage in inappropriate behavior while I am
in the laboratory.
4.
I will dress sensibly and appropriately for lab. I will avoid long, loose sleeves, dangling ear rings and
other large items of jewelry, and clothing that interferes with movement. I will not work in the
laboratory with bare feet, open-toed shoes, or high heels.

I will wear protective eyewear (safety glasses or goggles) throughout the entire period that I am in the
laboratory.
6.
I will use the safety equipment provided when needed. I will become familiar with the locations of the
fire extinguisher, the safety shower, the eye wash, and the first aid kit.
7.
I will immediately report to the instructor any accident, injury, incorrect procedure, or damaged
equipment.
8.
I will place broken glass and waste chemicals in designated containers. I will not dispose of any
hazardous chemical down the sink. If I am not sure of how to dispose of any chemical, I WILL ASK
MY SUPERVISOR!
9.
I will never place any chemical substance into my mouth during any lab activity, nor will I use mouth
suction for pipetting.
10.
I will not bring into the laboratory any food, drink, chewing gum, or tobacco products, except for what
may be stored in book bags.
11.
I will take all reasonable precautions to keep my hair well out of the way of my work area.
12.
I will follow good housekeeping and good safety procedures in cleaning spills, replacing caps on
containers, and replacing materials that are for general use.
13.
Upon completion of any lab work, I will make sure that the water and gas at my workstation is turned off
as well as any electrical apparatus I have been using.
14.
I will wash my hands thoroughly immediately after leaving the laboratory.
