By Betty S. Azar, Prentice-Hall, Inc., 2011. Course Description: A continuation of ESOL 0348. This course provides a review of essential grammatical and structural features while introducing their finer points. Emphasis is placed on compound and complex sentence structures and is designed to lead students toward active mastery of the patterns and principles of formal written English. Absence and Tardy Policies: According to HCC policy, the teacher may drop any student who misses 10 hours of class. Three tardies equals one-hour absence. If you are more than ten minutes late, you are absent from the class. Return to class on time after the five-minute break. Scholastic Dishonesty: Cheating includes copying another student’s answers on tests or homework and allowing another student to copy your work. If you cheat, you may receive a zero on that assignment. Disability Support: Students who need reasonable accommodations for disabilities should go to the Disability Support Service Office in Room 108 (Counseling Offices) or call 713-718-8420 to make necessary arrangements. Teachers can only provide accommodations requested by that office. Withdrawal Policy: In Texas public colleges and universities, students who enroll in the same course three or more times must pay higher tuition. Also, a law passed in 2007 limits new students to six withdrawals during their college careers. So do not drop (withdraw from) any class before you talk to your teacher or a counselor. Cellular Phones: Turn off your cell phone when you enter the classroom. Talking and text messaging on the cell phone are not permitted during class time. Grading Criteria: Chapter Tests Homework/Lab Participation/Attendance Final Exam Grading Scale: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 IP = 0-69 IP = progressing but not passing 60% 10% 10% 20% Course Calendar Advanced Intermediate Grammar Spring 2015 Week Date Lesson 1 1/21 Course introduction; diagnostic test 2 1/26 PAST TIME Chap 2: 2-4 > 2-8 1/28 FUTURE TIME Chap 3: 3-5 > 3-8 2/2 PRESENT PERFECT Chap 4: 4-2 > 4-7 2/4 PAST PERFECT Chap 4: 4-8 2/9 MODAL AUXILIARIES Chap 7: 7-1 > 7-6 2/11 MODAL AUXILIARIES Chap 7: 7-7 > 7-11 2/16 Test #1: Chapters 2, 3, 4, 7. 2/18 ASKING QUESTIONS Chap 5: 5-4, 5-9 > 5-13 2/23 Holiday: Presidents’ Day 2/25 NOUNS & PRONOUNS Chap 6: 6-11 > 6-15 3/2 THE PASSIVE Chap 10: 10-1 > 10-3 3/4 THE PASSIVE Chap 10: 10-4 > 10-5 3/9 GERUNDS & INFINITIVES Chap 13: 13-1 > 13-4 3/11 Test #2: Chapters 5, 6, 10, 13. 3 4 5 6 7 8 3/16-3/20 9 10 Spring Break 3/23 NOUN CLAUSES Chap 14: 14-1 > 14-3 3/25 NOUN CLAUSES Chap 14: 14-4 > 14-5 3/30 NOUN CLAUSES Chap 14: 14-6 > 14-8 4/1 NOUN CLAUSES Chap 14: 14-9 > 14-10 11 12 13 14 15 16 4/6 Test #3: Chapter 14 4/8 COMPARISONS Chap 9: 9-1 > 9-2 4/13 COMPARISONS Chap 9: 9-3 > 9-9 4/15 COMPARISONS Chap 9: 9-10 > 9-11 4/20 ADJECTIVE CLAUSES Chap 12: 12-1 > 12-3 4/22 ADJECTIVE CLAUSES Chap 12: 12-4 > 12-6 4/27 ADJECTIVE CLAUSES Chap 12: 12-7 4/29 IF CLAUSES 5/4 WISH CLAUSES 5/6 Test #4: Chapters 9 & 12 + If & Wish Clauses 5/11 Final Exam
