The Effects of Mentoring on the Academic Achievement and Behaviors of Middle School African American Males Kara Annonio June 2004 The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of mentoring on the academic achievement and behaviors of African American male middle school students. The mentoring program used was Proactive Alternative Learning (PAL). PAL is a program designed to improve students’ academics and behavior through mentoring. This study used a four subject descriptive study presenting achievement, attendance, and behavioral information over three school years. The study included four subjects, two mentored and two non-mentored students. Overall, the mentored students improved their behavior and achievement through the use of the Proactive Alternative Learning (PAL) mentoring program.
