UTPB Dual Credit Academy
• UTPB dual credit courses are $150 per course per student except for English 1301 and 1302
courses which are $200 each per course. (compared to $812.44 per course for traditional
students)
• $500 SPUR Scholarship awarded to all dual credit students who complete a dual credit course
with a 70 or better (one per semester). SPUR Scholarships can be used after a student graduates
from high school (one per semester) and can be applied toward any UTPB course for tuition,
textbooks, or fees for courses online or on campus.
• UTPB provides the Texas Success Initiative Assessment-Accuplacer (TSI) at no charge to the
Home School student.
• House Bill 505 allows 9th-12th grade students to begin taking up to 15 hours per semester.

• The University of Texas of the Permian Basin provides grades every 3-4 weeks to help monitor
academic performance.
• UTPB Dual Credit Academy staff are located in the Mesa Building MB 4207.
• UTPB students have access to the success center on campus or by way of online.

Student Expectations
 All students are encouraged to attend supplemental instruction as needed to ensure
their academic success (tutoring, etc.)
 All students will be expected to comply with all university policies, procedures, guidelines
and rules.
 In order to be successful, students must devote appropriate time for studies. Using time
effectively while in “supplemental instruction” can reduce some of this requirement.

TSI Assessment in Reading
The TSI in Reading is a multiple-choice test that covers the four content areas listed below.
 Literary Analysis measures your skill in identifying and analyzing ideas in elements of
literary texts.
 Main Idea and Supporting Details measures your skill in identifying the main idea of a
passage; comprehending explicit textual information in a passage.
 Inferences in a Text or Texts measures your skill in synthesizing ideas by making a
connection or comparison between two passages; making an appropriate inference about
single passages.
 Author’s Use of Language measures your skill in identifying a author’s purpose, tone,
organization or rhetorical strategies and use of evidence; determining the meaning of
words in context.

TSI Assessment in Writing-Multiple Choice
The multiple-choice section of the TSI in Writing measures your skills in the four content areas listed below.
•
Essay Revision measures your ability to provide coherence, organization and good word choice; to
achieve rhetorical effectiveness and use evidence.
• Agreement measures your ability to perform subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement and
determination of verb tenses.
• Sentence Structure measures your knowledge on topics like comma splices and run-on sentences;
improper punctuation; fragments and parallelism; subordination and coordination.
• Sentence Logic measures your ability to correctly place modifying phrases, clauses, and the ability to use
logical transitions.

TSI Assessment in Writing-Essay
The essay section of the TSI in Writing requires you to demonstrate clear focus, logically develop ideas in
well-organized paragraphs, and use appropriate language that indicates your purpose.
 Purpose and Focus: The extent to which you present information in a unified and coherent manner clearly
addressing the issue.
 Organization and Structure: The extent to which you order and connect ideas.
 Development and Support: The extent to which you develop and support ideas.
 Sentence Variety and Style: The extent to which you craft sentences and paragraphs demonstrating control

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin
 UTPB offers Petroleum and Mechanical with an emphasis in Nuclear Physics all
programs are ABET-Accredited. The Engineering Program strives to educate and
train engineers to formulate and solve the problems of today and tomorrow. It is
expected that students who apply themselves will not only be technically
prepared but also broadly educated, and thus, ready to make a significant
contribution. 1 of every 10 students at UTPB are enrolled in engineering.
 Aerodynamics Engineering is the most recent strand offered to UTPB students.
This program attempts to educate in designing and conducts basic and applied
science to evaluate adaptability of materials and equipment to aircraft design and
manufacture.
 The Industrial Technology Program at UTPB offers students a broad based general
Industrial Technology education. Graduates of the program will be equipped to
meet the new and emerging challenge of a modern high technology society.
