INTERNET SUMMARY ON EDUCATION, HEALTH, OR STATE OF
THE ECONOMY
Goals: To test students’ skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, expressing an opinion, and
justifying it.
Directions: Find a 1-2 page article on the internet on one of the above-mentioned topics
that interests you. Possible topics for education are any issue in education, such as
testing, teaching methodology, violence in the schools, class sizes, dropout rates, truancy
rates, tuition rates … in elementary, middle, high schools, or colleges. Possible health
topics include a disease, a disorder, an illness, its causes and effects, genetic links, ages it
targets, funding, and efforts being made for a cure. Note: All of these points do not have
to appear in the article, but some will. A possible topic for health includes maintaining a
healthy lifestyle. Possible topics for the state of the economy are government debt,
personal debt, job losses, foreclosures, bankruptcies, bailouts, stimulus package, health
care reform, changes in consumers’ spending habits, credit card restrictions on fees …
Format: Single spacing (consecutive lines) except under subtopics where double
spacing is used (one blank line). Use footers. Lower left side includes last name, first
name/Course and number/and Prof. Horn (three separate lines). The right side includes
the words Page 1 of ___. If your document is one page, then the right side will read Page
1 of 1. If it is two pages, then the words will read Page 1 of 2 and Page 2 of 2. Please
refer to page two of the handout. Note: The article will not be numbered,
Evaluation: Holistic grading (no mechanical or grammatical errors will be marked); no
Profile Sheet; 5% of total grade.
Format: Refer to next page in terms of font size, subheadings, spacing, and margins.
Note: SS = single spacing; DS = double spacing
Internet Article: Must be attached to this page. Four main points you listed and
paraphrased must be highlighted in article. DO NOT USE THE FORM ON LINE.
Create a new page based on the format as shown.
Assembling: Staple the article to your typed page and submit it in a folder with other
assignments.
