Travel & Networking Bursaries
Guidance for Applicants
In January 2016 the Research Services team at Anglia Ruskin University launched the Research Funding
Observatory (RFO): a series of events and seminars, underpinned by bursaries, to support the ARU research
community on the path to success.
The Travel & Networking Bursaries are an integral part of the Observatory, and are there to support you in
building networks to hopefully lead to involvement in a funding proposal. This document explains what you can do
with the funds provided by a T&N Bursary and how to apply for one.
Who are the bursaries for?
All academic and research members of staff can apply for a bursary. You are eligible if you have attended at least 2
Observatory seminars and have at least 18 months remaining on your contract. The bursaries are reserved for cases
that cannot be supported by your faculty or institute, so please check with your Head of Department whether
funds are available before applying for an Observatory bursary.
What are the bursaries for?
The funds can be used either to attend a networking or brokerage event and / or a conference, or to host a
networking or brokerage event at ARU. You can use your bursary to pay for:




Travel and subsistence for you or for guests
Conference or event fees
Costs of hosting a workshop, networking, or brokerage event (catering, room booking, etc.)
Attending or hosting meetings with external organisations to establish collaborations
This list is not exhaustive; you can use the funds for any other directly incurred expenses (replacement staff costs,
estate rates and indirect costs are not eligible).
How much will I get and how do I apply?
You can apply for up to £1,500, keeping in mind that you will be reimbursed for actual expenses so if you request
£1,000 and only spend £950, you will only receive the £950. There is a cap of £4,000 maximum per Faculty (and
corresponding institute), and applications match funded by Faculties are welcomed. The Faculty will support the
initial cost and the RFO will reimburse the faculty on production of receipts.
The bursaries are offered on a “first come, first served” basis so there are no deadlines. Payment for the event must
have been processed by the 31st July 2016 although the event you attend or host can take place right up to the end
of December 2016, no retrospective funding is allowed.
You will be expected to fill in a form for details, including why your department is unable to support you as first
recourse, and will need to be approved by your Head of Department. The application form is available on the
intranet or you can request one by emailing observatory@anglia.ac.uk
The fund will open for applications at 9am on the 11th February 2016. Forms are available online to prepare in
advance but will not be accepted if submitted before the deadline.

How long does it take to get the results back?
Because this is not a competition we will process applications as soon as we receive them in time and date order
stamped on the email, and as long as all your information is in order you should hear back from us in a few days.
We aim to review the application and contact you within 5 working days.
