Anglia Ruskin University (Research, Scholarship & Development) Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision The purpose of this award is to promote, recognise and reward excellence in doctoral supervision. The award will be made to members of our staff who can demonstrate excellence in the supervision of doctoral students, including those studying for the PhD, the PrD, the DBA, the EdD and the MPhil. Eligibility Academic and research staff who have normally participated in the supervision of at least three doctoral students to successful completion. Nomination Nominations are invited from Heads of Department, in consultation with Directors of Research and Deans. Agreement should be obtained from prospective nominees to their names going forward for consideration for the award. We expect all of our supervisors to enable their students to, where appropriate: * * * * * * * initiate and plan a research project; acquire the research skills to undertake it and gain adequate access to resources; complete it on time; produce a high quality thesis; be successful in examination; disseminate the results; lay the basis for their future career. We expect that an excellent supervisor would be able to demonstrate: * * * * * * an interest in, and enthusiasm for, supervising and supporting research students; the ability to recruit and select good candidates and establish effective working relationships with them and, where appropriate, with cosupervisors; the ability to offer appropriate support to candidates’ research projects, including and encouraging and supporting them to write up their work, giving useful and prompt feedback on submitted work, advising on keeping the project on track, and monitoring progress; a concern to support the personal, professional, and career development of doctoral candidates; an ability to support candidates through the processes of completion of their thesis and final examination; an ability to critically evaluate their practice as supervisors and, where appropriate, disseminate it. Awards Two awards, each to the value of £2000, will be available to successful staff to support their academic development in the field of doctoral supervision. Procedure Nominees who have agreed to their name going forward should write a statement of a maximum of 1,000 words showing how they meet the criteria set out. The statement, along with a brief current CV, a list of past and present doctoral students, and supporting statements from present or former students, should be forwarded to the Head of Department. He or she should write a supporting letter, which should be forwarded to the Director of Research, Development & Commercial Services. The deadline for submissions is Monday 1 December 2014, 12 noon. Selection will be by a panel chaired by Professor Richard Andrews, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and include the Faculty Directors of Research, Directors of Research Students, Director, Research, Development & Commercial Services. The panel will determine who should receive the awards, and report their conclusions to the Research Committee. The statements of successful candidates will be published on our corporate website as examples of good practice in research.
