UC International Faculty-Led Study Abroad Mentoring Grant: 2015-2016 UC International is pleased to announce a call for proposals for Faculty-led Study Abroad Mentoring Grants. Purpose The purpose of these grants is to: Support the development and sustainability of education abroad opportunities for UC students. Support the UC2019► goal of increasing the number of students studying abroad to 1,700 per year. Provide an opportunity for UC faculty and staff who have not previously led a short-term education abroad program, and would like to gain experience in doing so. Provide funding for the recipient to travel with a group and to be mentored by a faculty/staff member experienced in leading short-term education abroad programs. Expected Outcome Mentoring grant recipients are expected to travel, as a mentee, in 2015-2016 (during spring break 2016, May break 2016 or summer semester 2016). Faculty grant recipients are expected to lead a faculty-led study abroad course in the 2016-2017 academic year that will lead to an increase in student participation in study abroad. Staff grant recipients are expected to develop an “outreach project” that will lead to an increase in student participation in study abroad in their department(s) or campus-wide. Eligibility Proposals will be accepted from all levels/ranks of faculty and staff. Preference will be given to proposals meeting any of the following criteria: all levels/ranks of faculty, and staff members who work directly with students (academic advisors are encouraged to apply) applicants who have not led, co-led, or participated as a mentee in an education abroad program before availability to travel as a mentee on a study abroad program taking place in 2015-2016 (during spring break 2016, May break 2016 or summer semester 2016). faculty and/or staff who work with students who are currently under-represented in education abroad (ethnic minorities, STEM, first generation, non-traditional students, etc.) faculty who intend to offer a 2016-2017 course that will be integrated into the departmental curriculum (count towards a student’s major as a requirement or an elective) and will be sustainable and recurring. These grants are non-renewable and final amounts will be determined by the selection committee. Awards are made only for the purpose of funding the international travel costs that would be incurred by the mentee. Retroactive funding of trips already taken or currently underway at the time of the announcement of awards will not be considered. Application Application packet must include: I. A completed and signed application form; II. A two-page (maximum), single-spaced essay addressing Why are you interested in gaining experience in understanding faculty-led study abroad programs? Faculty: Describe the course you intend to lead and how you are qualified to lead this program, if awarded this grant. Staff: Describe the “outreach project” that you plan to implement and how this will lead to better serving under-represented students in study abroad, if awarded this grant. (Optional) Is there a specific program or location offered in 2015-2016 that aligns well with your goals listed above? III. Letter of support (can be submitted via email) from applicant’s Department or Unit Head: Faculty applicants letter of support should: 1) Express support of program involvement and travel with a mentor during 2015-2016 (during spring break 2016, May break 2016 or summer semester 2016).This might include time away from the office for both program planning throughout the semester and for international travel for 1-3 weeks 2) Express support for teaching and leading a 2016-2017 study abroad course 3) Confirm that the applicant’s future study abroad course aligns with the strategic vision of the department/college Staff applicants letter of support should: 1) Express support of program involvement and travel with a mentor during 2015-2016 (during spring break 2016, May break 2016 or summer semester 2016).This might include time away from the office for both program planning throughout the semester and for international travel for 1-3 weeks 2) Express support of the applicant’s proposed “outreach project” and its intention of increasing the department’s study abroad participants 3) Confirm the applicant’s proposed “outreach project” can be reasonably implemented and is sustainable Process 1.
