July 2014
Welcome
Welcome to Inside St John’s, bringing
you the latest news from St John’s
Hospital in Livingston.
Special Care Baby Unit
The investment in services across St
John’s continues with news that the
Special Care Baby Unit at St John’s
Hospital is set to undergo a complete
redesign and refurbish with the
installation of new, modern facilities for
both babies and their families. Work is
due to start in August with completion of
the project scheduled for March 2015.
As the work involves major reconstruction
of the department, the service will be
delivered from a temporary facility within
the hospital while the project is
completed.
The new Unit will provide eleven cots with
modern clinical facilities for newborn
babies who require specialist care. The
design also focuses on the provision of
family-centred care with the inclusion of
two bedrooms with en-suite facilities
allowing parents to ‘room in’ with their
baby before discharge, a family room for
use by parents and siblings and a
counselling room allowing privacy and a
quiet space for parents.
This is an exciting project for everyone
involved in the work of the Unit and we
look forward to providing this modern
facility for the babies and their families.
Thank you to all staff within Neonatal,
Maternity and Children’s services for their
patience and understanding while this
improvement work for patients is going
on. For more information contact Lynne
Kerr, Clinical Manager at

The survey will be available online or in
printed format. It will take approximately
15 minutes to complete and your
feedback will be completely anonymous.
We would encourage you to take part so
we can get as comprehensive a picture
as possible of your views and allow us to
take action on the issues that matter to
you. Watch out for information coming

Smoking Update
Smoking on the hospital site whether by
visitors, patients or staff has been
reducing little by little and has been given
a boost by the ‘no smoking hatching’
painted on the ground around the front of
the building earlier this year. However,
the recent warm weather and open
windows has meant a smell of cigarette
smoke drifting into parts of the hospital.
Facilities have repainted and extended
the green hatching at the front of the
hospital which will contribute to a further
improvement in the environment as we
lead up to the Scottish Government
deadline for a ‘smoke free NHS in March
next year.
Partnership recently considered our
revised tobacco policy and several areas,
notably around enforcement of smoke
free grounds and e-cigarette use (which
are not allowed inside NHS buildings)
outside in the grounds need further
discussion. Updated information will be
available through the newsletter and on
the website as soon as it is available.
