Advanced Grammar

Course Description:
A continuation of ESOL 0352 this course provides a review of both essential and
finer points of the grammatical structural features of formal written English.
Emphasis is placed on active production and error analysis of standard English.
Course Student Learning Outcomes
1. Review all of the English verb tenses
2. Transform active sentences into passive sentences and vice versa
3. Transform discourse into complex sentences using well-formed noun
clauses.
4. Combine simple sentences into complex sentences using adverbial
clauses

1. Understanding and Using English Grammar,4th. ed., Azar

*TEXTBOOKS ARE REQUIRED! All students must bring the assigned
textbook to class by the first day of the third week of the course. For this
class, the date is February 3, 2015. Students who do not have the assigned
text by this date will be asked to leave the classroom.
**If you have a used textbook, you are expected to erase the answers to
exercises and do your OWN WORK for the exercises in class and for
homework which the teacher gives. Your participation grade will be
reduced if this is not followed.
Cell Phone Use During Tests:
As a general rule, cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed to be
used in the classroom. Therefore, during examinations(any type of test), cell
phones are strictly prohibited and may be taken up by the instructor in class.
Lab Requirements:
One hour each week will be devoted to work in the computer lab. Students will
use Focus on Grammar and other materials as determined by the instructor.

Academic Honesty:
Students observed cheating on examinations or assignments will receive a zero
grade. Plagiarism, which is to use ideas as your own which are not yours, is not
acceptable. This includes copying from a book, internet, a friend’s work, etc.
Attendance:
According to the HCC Student Handbook, pf. 2, you will be dropped from this
class if you have more than 12.5% absences of the total hours of instruction. For
this class, that is after 12 classes. You are considered tardy if you come to the
class after the class has begun at 11:50. If you are tardy 3 times, it is considered
an absence. You are considered absent if you come to the class after 12:00.
Make-Up Policy:
It is the responsibility of the student to make-up any assignments missed during
her absence. If the student does not make up the test, they will receive a zero.

Course Repeater Policy:
As of Fall, 2006, students who repeat a course for a third or more time will face
significant tuition fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and
universities. If you are considering withdrawing from a course because you are
not earning passing grades, confer with your instructor as early as possible about
your study habits, homework, test-taking skills, attendance, course participation
and opportunities for tutoring or other assistance that might be available.
