Illinois Innocence Project Client Exonerated of 1997 Murder
January 29, 2016
Teshome Campbell walked out of prison a free man on January 29, 2016, after being wrongfully
convicted and imprisoned 18 years for a murder he did not commit. The district court ruled on December
30, 2015 – just over 18 years after the crime – that Teshome received ineffective assistance of counsel at
his original trial for the 1997 Christmas morning murder of a man in Champaign, IL.
The federal district court reversed Teshome’s convictions and ordered the state to determine if it would
seek to retry Teshome for the murder. On January 29, 2016, the State’s Attorney moved to dismiss all
charges. Teshome, with only an hour’s notice, packed his belongings into four boxes and stepped out of
Dixon Correctional Center, back into the world a free man. See more about Teshome Campbell and
