Notes from 8/22/07. The notes were briefly reviewed, and a correction noted in the time of
the next meeting.
II.
Basic Skills Initiative Update: Budget, BSI Regional Meeting. Rebecca reported that the
$33.1 million in State funding that had been set aside at the time the State budget was adopted
has been restored with a legislative ‘clean up’ bill. Both houses have passed the bill, and it
awaits the governor’s signature. [Note: the day after the BSSA meeting the governor signed
the legislation.] At the next BSSA meeting the group will need to develop a proposal on a
process to allocate basic skills funds for 2007-08, and a proposal for a process for the adoption
of the basic skills planning matrices. The regional BSI meeting is coming up on October 12,
and BSSA members were asked to make plans to attend the meeting.
III.
Meeting times – change to Friday? The next BSSA meeting was changed from Wednesday
to Friday, September 21, 11:00-1:00. At the next meeting we want to have a draft planning
matrix that we can share with the District Student Success Initiative, and for possible use at the
Oct. 12 workshop.
IV.
LACC Student Success Initiatives. As background ideas for planning matrix projects, the
LACC Student Success Initiatives was distributed and briefly discussed. Most of the SSI
projects are on the BSI Planning Matrix.
V.
Article: Beyond the Open Door. Excerpts from this article were shared and discussed. The
article suggests many things community colleges can do the improve student learning.
VI.
Draft Planning Matrices. Draft planning matrices for each of the sections were distributed
and discussed. Several activities were identified that should be added to the matrix, including
the Math Pi Shoppe and the basic skills bridge program in Learning Skills. Other changes
were made to activity descriptions and to who has responsibility for activities. In addition,
several structural changes will be made. The activities in Section A will be organized into
groups. Also, the taskforce realized that several activities appear in multiple sections. We
decided it would be helpful if key activities are presented as cross-sectional, emphasizing that
the whole college works together in supporting student learning.
VII.
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be Friday, September 21, 11:00-1:00, President’s
Conference Room.
