MASTER OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION
NATURE OF THE MASTER’S THESIS IN COMMUNICATION
Students may choose to write a thesis instead of completing a
comprehensive examination. Students planning to continue in a Ph.D.
program or students interested in completing an extensive research project
are normally encouraged to choose the thesis option. Fulltime students
normally sign up for 6 credits of thesis direction (Thesis I and Thesis II)
during their final semester. Part time students normally sign up for three
credits of thesis direction over the course of their final two semesters. The
application to register for thesis credits must be completed prior to
registering for thesis credits. The form is available on line at
www.communication.villanova.edu/grad
Please note that the date by which students must submit two copies of
the final approved draft of their thesis to the Graduate School is listed in the
Graduate Catalog or is available online at:
http://www.villanova.edu/enroll/registrar/calendar
Students select a thesis director who agrees to serve as the chair of
the student’s committee. The student, after consulting with their thesis
director, secures two additional graduate faculty members to serve on the
student’s committee, one of whom must be a graduate faculty member in the
Communication Department. The student writes a prospectus (which, in
revised form, often serves as the first or first and second chapters of the final
thesis) which is submitted to the student’s committee at least two weeks prior
to the date of the student’s oral defense of the prospectus. Once the
committee approves the prospectus, the student completes the writing of the
thesis under the thesis director’s supervision. Upon completion of an
approved thesis, the student submits the thesis draft to his/her committee, at
least two weeks prior to the date of the scheduled oral thesis defense. Upon
successful completion of the oral defense, the student makes any final
revisions, which, once approved, constitutes the student’s final thesis. One
copy of the final thesis is submitted to the thesis director and two copies are
submitted to the Graduate School by the required date listed in the Graduate
School catalog. Please consult the Graduate School’s “Guide to Writing of
the Master’s Thesis” for style and formatting of the thesis. It is available
online at:
http://www.gradartsci.villanova.edu/policies/1_A%20Guide%20to%20the%20Writing%
20of%20the%20Master%20Thesis%20(revised).doc
STUDENTS SHOULD CONSULT WITH THEIR ADVISORS AND/OR
MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNICATION GRADUATE FACULTY IF THEY
HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE MASTER’S THESIS.
