End of Ch. 8 Review
Good evening ESOL 0355. Here is the rest of the lesson we did not finish last class, starting on page
148. Feel free to email me if you have any troubles/questions at ira.leroy@hccs.edu.
Pg. 148, Chart 8-6 Forms of Other
- Forms of other can be used as either adjectives or as pronouns.
- Another is singular-- notice that it is composed of two words combined, An Other; One other.
-Example: I want another pizza.
- When referring to the plural of something, use "the other."
- Example: The other books are expensive.
Notice here that "The other" goes with the plural "books."
-- Thus, "another" can mean "one more or additional of something."
-- "other/others" without "the" can mean "several others in addition to what's already stated."
Example: Do you have any other pizza toppings?
Here, "other" refers to additional pizza toppings.
-- "The others" refers to all that remain from a given number.
Examples: The other cookie is yours. The others (cookies) are yours.
-- "Another" is used as an adjective with expressions of time.
--Do exercise 26 on Page 149.
-- Look over chart 8-7 on page 152 and do exercise 32 on your own.
Good luck on the test tomorrow! We'll go over the homework exercises first thing in class, then
start the test.
