Evaluation and Requirements Your final grade for this course will be based on how well you do in meeting the evaluation requirements listed on your assignment schedule and applying the grading scale which is listed below: Evaluation Requirements 3 tests (drop one) 45 Final Exam 15 Class work 10 Homework Assignments 20 Excel assignment (in class) Total 10 100 points Bonus points 10 TESTS There will be 3 tests. They will all be online.. They will consist of problems similar to the homework, and will generally have 7-8 parts. You will have to work at least 5 parts. Tests will be timed at 2 hours. I will drop your lowest test grade. CLASS WORK – we will do some problems in class, and in addition, I will be calling on you as a class or in groups to answer questions using Socrative Teacher. You will answer, if you are here, and your response will be logged into the average for this grade. So at the end of the term, I have called on the class 20 times, and you have responded 18 out of those 20 times, then you will receive 9 points, or (18/20) x 10. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS The homework assignments are online through the Connect website. There will be 12 assignments, but you will have to turn in only 8 assignments. Each assignment takes a certain amount of time and has a deadline, so get started with this and stay up with your work. In addition, the test problems will be very similar to the homework, so if you can do well on the homework, it will certainly help you do well on the tests. In addition, I am providing exercises in non-Connect format for you to use to practice for the test. These exercises are for your benefit and will not be graded. EXCEL ASSIGNMENT - we will go to the accounting lab and complete an excel worksheet. If you are familiar with Excel, you will still need to pay attention to the directions I give. If you are not, I will help you get up to speed. You will be graded for this assignment mainly on your use of formulas (that I will give you.) FINAL - is NOT optional. It will be online. CLASSWORK – we will do some work for a grade in class, either in groups or individually. This will be worth 10 points. If you are not present, you will not get the points for that day. MISTAKES – Everyone makes mistakes, myself included. I am trying this on a tentative basis: if, during the course of my lecture, point out a mistake that I have made, (mathematical or otherwise) then I will award you a bonus point. See rules below for bonus points. This needs to be my mistake, not one in Connect. Be tactful if you can. If this practice proves to be disruptive to the class I will discontinue it. BONUS POINTS – the way to earn bonus points is 1) to be on a winning team if we play a game for bonus points, 2) to be present and participating in an exercise that will award all participants with a bonus point, 3) to be on your toes and be the first to correct me (tactfully and with great amounts of respect) if I make a mistake during a lecture or when I am putting a problem solution on the board. See below for rules for 1) and 2). And 4) to do more than the required number of homework assignments. RULES FOR 1) AND 2) - you must be present to win! And that means from the very beginning. We will start any games or group exercises at any time during class, but mostly at the very beginning. If you are not present when I have assigned teams or have made the assignment, then you MAY NOT PLAY AND WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR A POINT. This means that if you are late, you will have to work harder on the regular assignments to earn an A, or the grade of your choice. ATTENDANCE - I will take attendance daily. If you are not present when I take attendance, please do not ask me to count you present. If you miss more than once at the very beginning of the semester you may be automatically dropped from the course. Do not ask me to petition for your re-enrollment by lying about your presence in my class. After the date of record (about 2 weeks after the start of class) you will not have to worry about this. But if you stop coming to class, do not expect me to drop you from the class. This is your responsibility. The last day to drop the class with a W is November 1. Grading scale 89-5-100 A 79.5-89.49 B 69.5-79.49 C 59.5-69.49 D 59.49 and below F BEHAVIOR IN THIS CLASSROOM – I take attendance daily. If you are late to class and I have already taken roll, you will be counted as absent. If you leave early (unless you tell me first and have some extenuating circumstances) you will be counted as absent. And if I see you texting in class, I will count you absent and may ask you to leave and/or give you a zero for any in-class work for the day. Laptop computers are allowed, but if you use your laptop, you must sit in the front row. School withdrawal policy It is the responsibility of each student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of F in the course. A student may officially withdraw in any of the following ways: 1) Complete an official withdrawal form at any HCCS campus. 2) Send a letter requesting withdrawal to: Registrar Houston Community College System P.O. Box 667517 Houston, Texas 77266-7517 The withdrawal will be effective as of the date of the postmark. Withdrawals will not be accepted by telephone.. Attendance – School policy and my policy School Policy: A student may be dropped from any course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences of 12.5% of the hours of instruction. For example, in a 3-credit hour lecture class meeting 3 hours per week, a student may be dropped after 6 hours of absence. My policy on attendance - if you stop coming to class I will NOT drop you. Incompletes The grade of “I” (incomplete) is conditional and at the discretion of each instructor. If you receive an “I,” you must arrange with your instructor to complete the course work by the end of the following term (excluding summer.) After the deadline, the “I” becomes an “F”. Students with disabilities-academic dishonesty Students with disabilities Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disabilities Service Office at the respective college at the beginning of each semester. Faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. Academic Honesty Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty. “Scholarly dishonesty” includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. My policy on academic dishonesty If I find that you have been cheating, I will lower your semester grade by one letter and give you a zero on the test or assignment. If I find you have done it again, I will drop you from the class with an F. This includes but is not limited to cheating on tests and turning in the solutions manual as homework. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston Community College Student System online near the end of the term. This year, HCC with the help of the Faculty Senate is implementing the online EGLS3 -- Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System to replace the paper SEOI, Student Evaluation of Instruction. More messages will come throughout this semester.
