Process and Steps: My second graders studied about sea creatures for science. Mr. Garcia read the book, My Very Own Octopus by Bernard Most. Each student created their own octopus puppet with one Brussels sprout, two wiggle eyes, two cloves for the ears, and four green pipe cleaners pushed through the holes to be eight tentacles. Materials Needed: See Process and Steps Essential Questions: Who is in your story? Where does your octopus live? What is happening to your octopus? 1 What skills, elements, vocabulary were taught? Skills: listening, speaking, writing vocabulary of the sea: octopus, tentacles 2. How did you assess the children’s understanding? The children participated in the webbing of vocabulary before writing their own story. 3. Where could you go from here? My students wrote their own story about their very own octopus. 4.
