CSUSM Safety Training Radiation Producing Machines AUTHORITY To comply with University policy, University license conditions, the Code of Federal Regulations 10 CFR 20, and the California Code of Regulations Title 17. Also to comply with the Injury & Illness Prevention Program CCR title 8 section 3203. Scope_______________________________________________________ The purpose of this document is to establish guidance for individuals using or having responsibility for the use of radiation producing machines. This training document includes information regarding the potential hazards associated with a radiation producing machine in your lab area and provides guidance for you to work safely with ionizing radiation producing machines and equipment. It is vital that you adhere to these safety guidelines. Contact Regina Frasca, the campus Radiation Safety Officer with any questions you might have regarding a radiation producing machine on campus labs. HANDLING PROTOCOL Before using any radiation producing machines, your Instructor/Supervisor/Principal Investigator will advise you of the hazards of the specific machine being used, as well as proper operating procedures of the machine. You are required to read the CSUSM Radiation Safety Manual. If you are female, also read the supplement entitled: "The Pregnant or Potentially Pregnant Nuclear Medicine Technologist". Users of radiation producing machines that are pregnant should declare themselves pregnant to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The RSO can register you properly and act to control your exposure to radiation. It is recommended that the user declare, in written form to the RSO, that they are pregnant. In most cases, this means you will be asked to wear an exposure badge. It is highly recommended that you inform your Instructor/Supervisor/Principal Investigator and the RSO that you are pregnant so that we can adequately protect you and your developing baby. Although you are not required to declare your pregnancy, it is important that you discuss this issue with your physician prior to working with radioactive materials or radiation producing machines. You will be asked by your Instructor/Supervisor or Principal Investigator (PI)/Supervisor to sign off on your training (see below). Your PI/Supervisor/Instructor and the Office of RM&S will retain a copy of this acknowledgement. 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT You will not be permitted to work with Radiation Producing Machines until you: A. B. C. Have read the Radiation Safety Training for Personnel Using Radiation Producing Machines. Have read the Radiation Safety Manual section for Radiation Producing Machines. Have been instructed in the hazards and safety controls of working with Radiation Producing Machines and radiation safety requirements. I have been instructed by the Instructor/Principal Investigator/Supervisor on the appropriate procedures and safety features of the radiation producing machine/equipment. I understand that dosimetry (a finger ring and whole body dosimeter) provided by RM&S shall be worn while operating the radiation producing machine/equipment. I will not override any safety interlock for the radiation producing machine/equipment at any time. I will notify RM&S if there is any procedural changes made or in the event that the radiation producing machine/equipment malfunctions. Before changing any samples, I will verify that the x-rays are off by: The current meter reads zero. The light indicating the x-rays are on is NOT LIT I have been trained in Radiation Safety Training for personnel using Radiation Producing Machines: Name (Print)____________________________________ Date _____________ Name (Signature)________________________________ Supervisor/Instructor______________________________ *Return completed ACKNOWLEDGEMENT page to your Instructor/ Supervisor/ Principal Investigator and Risk Management & Safety. 2
