COURSE SYLLABUS
HIPAA Professional Seminar
Professional Development: HITT 2000
Intensive training in an identified area(s) to meet continuing education and/or review/update requirements
associated with professional licensure or certification. Short-term class covering various aspects of the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) Administrative Simplification Title.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this training is for students to learn the necessary components of HIPAA
compliance from an administrative perspective. This course covers information relevant to the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
GOALS:
Upon completion of this program the student will be able to:




Explain Privacy Rules
Define Transaction Code Sets
Analyze Workflow and Security
Prepare a basic Gap Analysis
LEARNING OUTCOMES:




Students will demonstrate comprehension of current issues or topics or new/updated
guidelines through discussions and in class activities.
Students will demonstrate mastery of course objectives by successfully completing
hands-on activities
Students will participate in independent practice activity that gives students an
opportunity to practice learned skills
Students will participate in questions and answer activity at the end of each Topic.
PREREQUISITE: Students in, or entering, the Medical Business Office or Clinic, Hospital, etc. .
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: HIPAA Handbook for Healthcare Staff by HCPro (Will be handed out in
class)
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS
This is an 8-hour instructor guided course. Students will complete the required exercises and
hands-on activities within the textbook.

ATTENDANCE:
To receive a certificate of CEU credit, students must meet the following requirements:
- Attend 2 class days during the class meeting time
- Complete course materials, demonstrating mastery of course objectives
ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunities for Student Faculty Interaction - Students are encouraged to ask
questions during the didactic portion of the course and request clarification and guidance
while in the student laboratory.
Additionally, students may schedule individual
conferences with the instructor as needed.

Opportunities for Career Exploration - Career and employment opportunities for CTCE
courses are discussed in the didactic portion of the course. Other learning opportunities
are explored by discovering the students' interest and explaining the various disciplines
offered at HCCS.

Opportunities for supplemental Instruction - Students are informed of various books,
publications, videos, and software found in the HCCS library which relates to the field of
study. Outside assignments are given to enhance learning.

Speaker Forum - Speakers from the Industry sectors are invited to share information on
opportunities in employment and technical support.
