How did you decide that the Major Human Development was for you and what concentration are you? I am a Human Development major with an emphasis in counseling. I always wanted to be in a health related field, but was never too sure exactly what I wanted. My dad was my biggest supporter in life and after losing him 3 years ago I knew I wanted to continue making him proud. Rough times and personal experiences brought me to this major and I am very fortunate it fits me so perfectly. Human Development is such a versatile major and a great foundation for many different graduate programs. 2. How do you hope to use your degree? I plan on using my degree to obtain a public health related job. I am a huge advocator for health awareness, outreach and education for preventive care. Human Development has been a great foundation for me and I plan on implementing my counseling skills I learned from my course work into my future job. 3. When are you set to graduate? I am a Summer 2014 graduate. 4. Do you hope to continue your education? I plan on continuing my education by 2015. I want a year to gain as many hours of experience as I can either interning or working to help me advance in graduate school. I want to put what I learned in college to good use as soon as I can. 5. What steps do you need to complete before you apply for a Graduate Program? (Such as applying for the program, taking the GRE, Interning, Volunteering, Letters of Recommendation.) I plan on going to graduate school to receive a Masters in Public Health. I have been researching different graduate schools to see what they offer. Some schools do not require GRE and some do. Some require interning/volunteering experience and some do not. Most schools require at least two letters of letters of recommendations. You get the point. There are different requirements for each school and graduate program. Attending informative interviews really helps to see what each school expects and require. HD 495 has also helped me very much in being educated in different graduate programs and what to expect while graduate school. (Editor’s note: CSUSM’s MPH Program is coming soon!) 6. What do you see yourself doing in 5 years? (Discuss a company you may hope to work for, education program in progress, etc.) In 5 years I hope to have completed graduate school and have started my career. It is my dream to be a director/coordinator for a health and wellness program. School or clinical setting would be great. 7. What are your words of wisdom pertaining to students and the future? Interning and volunteering is great to gain experience. Take advantage of all the opportunities you have now, make connections and build your network. Make sure to find your passion because that will get you through all the stress and hard work of college. Theory of the Month: Albert Bandura’s Social Learning “The main idea of social learning is that people learn by watching what other people do and then copy that behavior. This is also called modeling.” Bandura was interested in seeing if children would learn violence. Many use this concept on a daily basis; we mimic others to learn, whether in sports, on the job or in school. http://www.alleydog.com/topics/learning_and_behavior.php#.U18Dq15H1SU We would love to hear from you.
