I attended the non-profit panel’s workshop by the Career Readiness Initiative at CSUSM and a theme that stood out was “follow your passion”. The presenters also stated that we have to figure out our passions and follow them in order to succeed. They also agreed that we have to start little by little, gain experience, and put in many hours through hands-on work for at least 1-3 years in order to see results. Some of the presenters did not know what to do before college. Through their volunteer and job experience they found out their passion, and then, they just followed it. It may involve switching or adding different majors, pursuing a master degree, intense training, and/or certifications. Topic of the Week Career Center Career Readiness Initiative Workshops Non-Profit Organizations Panelists: Irma Cota followed her passion for social inequities, volunteered many hours in her community and college, majored in social work and health science. She is the President & Chief of North County Health Services. Donald Stamp followed his passion for social justice, majored in anthropology and psychology, and worked as a guidance counselor. Now he is the Executive Director of North County Life Line. Lance Spellman did not know what to do before college. He worked part-time in a health facility for families with disabilities; he found his passion in this area and majored in Disability Services Management. He is a Human Services Associate in The Arc of San Diego. Interesting things to consider: - Get involved in the area you want to work. - Look at the San Diego Business Journal for companies that interest you and find out what they do, who is coming and going, and who are the top companies in the arena. - In California we are governed by many regulations, get to know them. - Go to websites and contact someone and ask questions about their organization; interview people, and chase them. - Be inquisitive once you have your job, share ideas, build on skills and get people to know you –know thyself, build-on character traits. - And very important –work on your RESUMEE October 2013 HD Peers The Career Center helps with resume development, career assessments, grad school info, workshops, mock interviews, and more.
