COURSE SYLLABUS: MATH 0108 – 4 Weeks - (Revised January, 2014)

Note: All students must complete the orientation before starting their work.
1.
Catalog Description. Topics include real numbers, basic geometry, polynomials, factoring, linear equations,
and inequalities, quadratic equations, and rational expressions. A departmental final examination must be
passed with a score of 60% or more in order to pass this course. 3 hours credits (3 Lecture).
2.
Prerequisites: Must have received a “D” grade for MATH 0308 the previous semester or have received
departmental approval for this course based upon previous scores.
3.
Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI). Computer terminals are located on the second floor of the Eastside
Campus (Angela Morales Bldg). Students must use the terminals in your assigned classroom during class
time. Students are reminded that it is their responsibility to complete all of the modules in the course outline.
They should expect to attend class during their entire class time. In addition students are encouraged to attend
open lab in room 2002 outside normal class time to finish course modules. (See the attached course module
completion schedule.)

Note: Students are expected to spend one hour of homework for each hour of classtime.

Headphones. Headphones are necessary and required. Headphones should be used only to listen to lecture
videos and may not be used for music.
6.
Attendance sign-in. Students must complete a Learning Agreement each time they register for a course or
they may be withdrawn. CAI attendance is checked during class time. In addition, students must complete
some work each week to be counted present. Students must be aware of the failures of technology that can
occur in the lab from time to time. However, students will still be expected to complete all their
assignments. Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for non-attendance, the
instructor has full authority to drop a student for excessive absences. A student who is dropped will receive a
grade of “W” in this class. A grade of “W” could also affect financial aid status.
STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO SIGN-IN TWO TIMES FOR A FOUR-WEEK COURSE WILL EARN A GRADE
OF “F” THE COURSE. This reflects the 12.5% attendance policy addressed in the student handbook.
7.
Portfolio. An organized portfolio is required and should contain all course notes, course syllabus (see instructor
if you lose your syllabus), student work, and results from all/any exams. The portfolio should be available
during class time and will be checked periodically by your instructor.

Calculators. Calculators may be used for homework. However, calculators are never to be used on any
exams.

Academic Honesty: All Houston Community College System students are required to exercise academic
honesty in completion of all tests and assignments. Penalties for academic dishonesty (cheating on a test,
plagiarism, collusion on an assignment, etc.) may include, but are not limited to, a reduced grade, or a "0" on
that test or assignment, a "W" in the course, or an "F" in that course. Students are not to receive help from
other students on assessments, exams, or tests, however students are encouraged to help each other while
completing homework assignments.
10.
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning,
psychiatric, developmental, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must
contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) Counselor at the beginning of each semester. Faculty members
are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the DSS office. Mr. John Reno is the

Co-Requisite Policy. Houston Community College enforces developmental prerequisites and co-requisites of
college-level courses. When a student enrolls in a college-level course that has developmental course corequisites, he/she must also co-enroll in the developmental co-requisite course. If the student withdraws or is
withdrawn for non-attendance from the co-requisite developmental course(s), the student must also be
withdrawn from the college-level course. Override capability of this policy is reserved for developmental chairs
and deans only.
12.
Student Course Reinstatement Policy: Students have a responsibility to arrange payment for their classes
when they register, either through cash, credit card, financial aid, or the installment plan. Students who are
dropped from their courses for nonpayment of tuition and fees who request reinstatement after the official date
of record (OE Date) can be reinstated by making payment in full and paying an additional $75 per course
reinstatement fee. A student requesting reinstatement should present the registrar with a completed
Enrollment Authorization Form with the signature of the instructor, department chair, or dean who should verify
that the student has been regularly attending class. Students who are reinstated are responsible for all course
policies and procedures, including attendance requirements. A dean may waive the reinstatement fee upon
determination that the student was dropped because of a college error.
13.
Lab Policy. Children, food, drink, loud talking, and smoking are prohibited in the lab facilities. Headphones
will be used in class only to view math lecture videos. Cell phones must be set to vibrate and talking must be
done outside the lab. Be aware that extended phone conversations during class time may result in the student
being counted as either absent or tardy. Online chatting and text messaging are strictly prohibited during class
time.
14.
Policy on Grading. The grading for MyMathLab is based upon completion of the homework, assigned quizzes
and the Final Exam. Any uncompleted quizzes or exams will be given a grade of zero. A departmental final
exam will count for 40% of your grade. Quiz scores will count for 30% of your grade.
15.
Competency–Based Instruction. This course is broken down into four units. Based upon the results of your
pretest, you will be placed into one or more unit of instruction. Each unit consists of two, three, or four quizzes
which are used as a diagnostic test to determine your homework and as a posttest to determine if you are
ready to proceed to the next level. Posttest mastery is set at 80% and posttest quizzes may be taken up to ten
times, with the highest score being used to determine your grade. Once each unit of instruction is passed, then
you may prepare for and take the course final exam.
16.
Grading Scale. The final letter grade will be determined accordingly:
100 – 90* “A”
89 – 80* “B”
79 – 70* “C”
Below 69 “F”
*The final exam must be passed with a score of 60% or better in order to be eligible for a grade of A, B, or C.
17.
Final Review. A Final Review is posted on the MyMathLab site and will count as 5 extra points towards the
Final Exam grade. Turn in the Final Review when you take the Final Exam.
18.
Final Exam. All students must take the comprehensive written departmental final exam, constructed by the
Math Department. The final exam, the in-class quizzes and the MyMathLab homework form the basis for your
final course grade. Students in Math 0108 must pass the final exam with a grade of 60% or better to be
eligible to receive a grade of “A,” “B,”or “C.” Only students who are withdrawn from the course before the official
withdrawal date of ___September 11,2014______, 12:00 noon will be eligible for a grade of “W.”

19. Possible Consequences for Repetition of Classes. Students who are officially enrolled in a course for three or
more times may face a significant tuition/fee increase at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities.
Please ask your instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring or other assistance prior to considering
course withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing grades.
20. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: Receiving a W in a course may affect the status of your student Visa. Once a W
is given for the course, it will not be changed to an F because of the visa consideration. Please contact the
International Student Office at 713-718-8520 if you have any questions about your visa status and other transfer
issues.
21. Basic Competencies:
Reading: The student is expected to read his/her math book before he/she comes to class. Read the sections
which will be covered in class.
Writing: When doing the homework assignments, the students should copy each problem out of the book and
show all of the work. If necessary, explain the steps take to solve the problem.
Speaking: The student should be prepared to present difficult problems in class so the class can discuss the
solution method as a group.
Listening: The student is responsible for any material presented in class during lectures.
Critical Thinking: Application problems are an integral part of mathematics. You will be assigned numerous
application problems and should expect to see similar problems on your exams.
Computer Literacy: There are numerous websites that can help explain algebra concepts.

Tutoring Assistance:
Online Tutoring Services: Houston Community College offers FREE online tutoring in a variety of subjects,
including mathematics, English and writing. To take advantage of these Online Tutoring Services, go to
www.hccs.askonline.net. Your questions will be answered by a qualified HCC tutor or faculty member within 24
hours (usually under 6 hours).
Tutoring Assistance Center: There is also free math and science tutoring available in the Tutoring Assistance
Center (TAC). For a copy of the tutoring schedule go to http://m.se.hccs.edu/index.php and click
on the Tutoring Center link.
23.
Withdrawals: The Texas State Legislature has begun to impose penalties on students who drop courses
excessively. In 2007, the Legislature passed a law limiting students to no more than six (6) total course
withdrawals throughout their academic career in obtaining a baccalaureate degree. To help students avoid
having to drop/withdraw from any class, HCC has instituted an Early Alert process by which you instructor will
"alert" you and HCC student services of the chance you might fail a class because of excessive absences
and/or poor academic performance. You should visit with your instructor, a counselor, or HCC Online Student
Services to learn about your options.
Students MUST visit with a faculty advisor, a counselor or online student services prior to withdrawal from
class. If a withdrawal is to be given, this must be done prior to January 29, 2014, at 12:00 noon. After that
date and time, students will no longer be allowed to drop and will receive the grade that they earned. Faculty
will NO longer be allowed to give Ws on the final grade sheet; any faculty member who wishes to withdraw a
student will be required to process the drop BEFORE January 29, 2014, at 12:00 noon.
Students in developmental mathematics classes who exceed the number of allowable absences and tardies (>
12.5% of class time) after the DROP DATE will automatically receive an “F
