Outreach Forester Sustainable Forestry & Wood Products Program Appalachian Sustainable Development *Position Description* Background Appalachian Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit community development organization committed to strengthening the health of the economy, the community, and the environment in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. ASD operates a Sustainable Forestry & Wood Products program whose goals are to improve the quality of forest practices in the region and to encourage local processing of forest resources in order to add value and create jobs. ASD operates this program through a volunteer task force and several partner organizations. Overall Purpose The primary purposes of the Outreach Forester are to improve the quality of forestry practices in the ASD service area and to procure raw material for ASD’s wood processing center. Specific Duties 1. Coordinate non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowner outreach activities, including recruitment, education, and training. 2. Coordinate logger outreach activities, including recruitment, education, and training. 3. Implement ASD’s Standards for Sustainable Forest Management, including forest management planning, timber sale administration, and forest monitoring. Qualifications 1. Demonstrated commitment to the principles and practices of sustainable forestry. 2. Minimum 4 year degree in forestry at an SAF-accredited educational institution. 3. Minimum 2 years experience in hardwood forest management planning and timber sale administration. 4. Outstanding speaking, education, training, and “people” skills. 5. Membership in the Forest Stewards Guild is preferred. Compensation & Support Initial employment will be on a 12-month contractual basis, at a rate of $110 to $130 per day, depending upon education and experience, up to a maximum of $30,000. The position may ultimately evolve into a full-time salaried position, with benefits. Relevant travel will be compensated at $0.30/mile. The Outreach Forester will work primarily out of ASD’s Abingdon office, where secretarial support services, copier, fax, and computer will be available.
